How would you feel about someone sniffing every 5 seconds?

If you were stuck on a flight or bus with them?

A few years back DD (she's 10) developed a sniffing tic. We ignored it (with a lot of difficulty, it massively puts me on edge) and it went away. But it's back. And it's bad. At the moment she's sniffing every 5 seconds or so.

In a month we're going to a holiday flight then bus to destination. If you were stuck on a flight/bus with a 10 year old sniffing every 5 seconds how would you feel? In the car today and I almost wanted to get out and walk miles home rather than stay in the car.

My friend's son has a sniffing tic. He's ND though and it's very difficult to control.

VisitationRights · 01/06/2024 19:52

Wouldn’t bother me at all. And if I saw an adult say anything to another adult, or child, I would tell them they were rude. If anyone said anything to my child I would tell them to kindly fuck off.

It wasn't funny or a joke @EdithStourton

But you can mind-read over the internet....

I'm noise sensitive, I can't help it, any more than someone with a tic can help it, so if I were sitting nearby I'd get out my noise-cancelling headphones (entirely normal thing to do on a plane) and hope to drown it out. Also, I wouldn't know if it was a tic or just a kid who refused to blow his or her nose out of sheer bloody-mindedness.

The other bit was supposed to be mildly funny.

Over and out.

In what world is saying that you would murder a child, for any reason, even remotely funny?

longdistanceclaraclara · 01/06/2024 19:54

It would drive me fucking insane. Sorry.

Sometimes you can't help your reaction. What annoys you annoys you.

It would wind me up and I would end up focusing on it and wind myself up more.

I'd be handing anyone who did it a hankie and telling them to blow their nose unless I knew it was a symptom of a bigger issue.

But it will still annoy me.

god that’s so rude, if you did that to my kid, I’d make you regret it so fast and never want to do it again.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 01/06/2024 19:57

I was on a 3 hour train journey opposite someone doing this - train was rammed so no possibility of moving - by the end of the journey I felt like forcibly ramming a tissue up her nose 😡

Barleycat · 01/06/2024 19:58

I'd want to strangle her tbh. I am very sensitive to those sort of things and intolerant in general.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/06/2024 20:01

It would remind me of how fucking fortunate we are to be able to afford the most expensive Bose noise cancelling earbuds, my husband is autistic with misophonia and wouldn’t be able to cope, to the point where he’d have to remove himself from the situation and on an airplane that’s tricky! We all have our little quirks and the best we can do is just try to compromise and be considerate of each other because we don’t know what other people have got going on.

It wasn't me who said that...

MyDogsLikePaddleBoarding · 01/06/2024 20:11

If it bothered me, I’d put AirPods in and listen to something. Some people, like your daughter, can’t help it and we should all be more understanding and tolerant. Being bothered by the noise isn’t an issue, how we deal with it, when someone may not be doing it on purpose, is important. Tics can be very distressing for people and we should be understanding.

I see the arseholes are out this evening. The reality is that the types of people talking shit on here, are the least likely to say or do anything. Keyboard warriors with sad little lives. No one likes them in real life so they talk shit on here for shock value.

IncognitoUsername · 01/06/2024 20:13

@EdithStourton
I didn’t say you did?
My post was for various people who have said that.

Lord can we stop with this shit. I'm charitably assuming you only read the title of the OP and not the OP itself, or you'd know you're being pretty despicable about a kid with a disability.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 01/06/2024 20:15

A dry sniff wouldn’t bother me.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 01/06/2024 20:16

I used to have things like this when I was younger. My mum called them my habits. Also finger clicking and whistling.
Be kind to her she will grow out of it

"with sad little lives. No one likes them in real life".

You don't actually believe this, do you...? Or are you doing that online thing where if we don't like what somebody else has said we make a childish personal insult about the person?

Sure you would.

So we are sitting on a plane, your dc is constantly sniffing and I hand them a tissue and tell them I think they need to blow their nose, what do you say that "makes me regret it so fast" and doesn't doesn't make you look like an idiot? 🤔

You say your dc has a tic, I say ah ok, thought she needed a tissue - conversation over, no big deal.

You "make me regret it so fast" I tell you to calm the down you are embarrassing both yourself and your dc. You get more wound up I ask airline staff to intervene and they tell you to calm down. I go back to reading my book, thinking what an idiot but otherwise completely unbothered. You sit there fuming and ruin the flight for both yourself and your dd.

Or do you see it going another way?

This. 👏 The playground mean girl vibes are strong. No doubt they peaked at high school and the only way they get attention now is to say nasty things online.

Don’t worry about it OP. It’s not like she can help it.

Kendodd · 01/06/2024 21:28

Looks like I'm the only person on earth this wouldn't bother.

Twynklebell · 01/06/2024 21:28

I would hate it, would drive me mad but at the end of the day, its my problem and not hers - I also have misophonia - certain noises really really get to me. I'd move if I could or use headphones.

To all the people driven mad by this, how the fuck do you cope with life? We live in a nosy world and planes are nosy.
