Steak pie

Hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather Grin

I am planning on making steak pie tomorrow. Does anyone have any good recipes/tips to make it?

I usually put the diced beef with gravy granules in the slow cooker for around 6 hours or longer if needed. Then put the puff pastry on top. It does taste nice and the family enjoy it. How can I get it like the steak pie you buy in restaurants etc.

There's a fella on you tube called Rik, backyard chef he has a fab recipe for meat pie just like you get in a restaurant.

They mix cornstarch into the gravy to make it silky.

Definitely slow cooking tenderises it. I dip the steak in flour first and brown it quickly. That way, the flour thickens the gravy. Season it well. I love steak pie

Caramelise onions, add tomato purée, mushrooms & thyme. Butter & cornflour, 3tbsp Worcester sauce.

I'm assuming you mean Scottish steak pie in and ashet dish?

Add some onion to the meat during slow cooking and then take it out before putting into the pie.

Add a little bit of marmite to give it a bit of a kick.

Much like you @Bluebellsinthewind

Diced beef with a chopped onion (my kids like me to add 4 x thick Richmond sausages) and a beef stock in the slow cooker for 7-8 hours

Sometimes add a few spoonful of bisto gravy granules at the end to really beef it up.

Then transfer to an ashet (pie dish) and cover with a puff pastry lid.

Serve with peas, mashed tatties and mashed neeps.

I’m pretty outraged that you are suggesting a stew with a pastry lid is a pie 😱

I love the Felicity Cloake “How to the make the perfect…” series, I enjoying reading her thoughts and outcomes of recipe tests and the recipes have consistently good results. I haven’t made the steak pie but it might be a good place to start.

@SummaLuvin

Don't ever come to Scotland. You might never get over your outrage. 😂

bluetopazlove · 01/06/2024 14:36

Oh you need to head straight off to Scots net .

norfolkbroadd · 01/06/2024 14:42

I always make this one www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/proper-beef-ale-mushroom-pie

I don't consider meat in instant gravy with a pastry lid to be a pie.

Soften onions in a pan and remove, coat the steak in seasoned flour and brown in the onion pan, once browned remove the steak, add the onions back to the pan and add an oxo cube or two, a squeeze of tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, cracked black pepper and half tub of passatta and cook down. Add the steak back into the sauce and let it cook down. I do mine in a casserole dish in the oven. Low and slow is the key. The sauce should thicken with the flour on the steak. Add beef sausages cut up at the steak browning stage if you want - there are always sausages in steak pie at our house.

A hard no to gravy granules I am afraid!

YY to braising first in seasoned flour as pp suggests. I add some umami ( tomato based savoury paste) rather than Tom purée or marmite but it works the same.

I would love to have the secret of a crispy bottomed pie. Never achieved that. Even with all the flan beans and blind baking in the world.

My mother ( who did her best) would bake a separate piece of half inch thick inedible semi raw pastry on a tray and serve with the pie filling.

When I say that I make steak pie 🥧 it's more like deconstructed steak pie Grin

Thanks for all the fab tips and advice. I didn't know onions went into steak pie. Also if you put tomato puree in etc won't it then taste like a tomato sauce.

Will check out the YouTube videos.

Dh is over the moon with the adding sausages suggestions 😋
