Hives

Does this look like hives? Just started out of nowhere today on my 8 year old. Itchy but not unbearable. She has been under the weather for the past week and not eating very much but other than that no symptoms. No new foods/washing powders or anything different. They lasted a couple of hours, spread all over her legs and arms, disappeared and then came back. Thank you.

My ds had hives like this a few months back when he wasn't feeling well and the doctor told me it was a virus. Cool bath and calamine lotion soothed it and also antihistamine.

Vanillalime · 31/05/2024 22:26

This looks like a nettles rash to me. Has she been outside at all?

MacaroniBeach · 31/05/2024 22:30

She paddle boarded yesterday and today she has played tennis on a court, but not a grass court so not near nettles but thank you for the suggestion.

perhaps like your child @Strawberryicecream88 it’s related to whatever she has had illness wise.

I've had hives and yes - I went to A&E once with it all over my body and was told we can develop allergies to things we've used for years abd years. I just carried on as normal and took antihistamines and then went away and never returned. Had 2 flare ups in short period then went?

sarahc336 · 31/05/2024 22:33

Yes hives can be viral. Also hives if from an allergy would come up pretty quick so think about anything they've touched /eaten recently

PostMenPatWithACat · 31/05/2024 22:33

Yes that's hives. I don't think there's a definitive cause. They can be related to allergy, viral, stress, etc. DS had a mega breakout when he was about 6 and then developed shingles.

I had outbreaks as a child when I was very stressed. Also once as an adult when I was similarly stressed.

YellowRollercoaster · 31/05/2024 22:34

It does look like hives to me. Have you given an antihistamine?

Moier · 31/05/2024 22:35

Yes that is definitely Urticaria.
If l accidentally have ibroprofen or asprin.. l get it..
( I'm allergic and gives me Urticaria/ hives).
Loads of things can cause it though from nettles to shellfish.
Needs antihistamines and calamine lotion or Eucrin lotion.
I sometimes have to have steroids.
Hope it gets sorted soon.

AnnaMagnani · 31/05/2024 22:50

If she's been under the weather it's probably viral.

As a long time hives sufferer they just pop up as and when they feel like it. Never been associated with an allergy but definitely with stress.

Serialcatmum · 31/05/2024 22:55

Defo hives. Everything seems to give me hives and I don’t know why. Suddenly I got hives! Tried everything to see what caused them but it’s a mystery! I take strong anti histamine every day now!

buffyslayer · 01/06/2024 00:15

Yes (I have chronic urticaria and am on a biologic med for it)

AnnaMagnani · 01/06/2024 07:19

@Serialcatmum your body just chose to start having hives.

When I got them, and they were clearly not going away, a dermatologist told me not to look for allergies as I wouldn't find them and it would drive me nuts.

Am so grateful for this advice as 25 years later... I still have hives! Not all the time but every now and then they creep back.

BeCleverSquid · 01/06/2024 08:42

Yes definitely looks like hives, I suffer from chronic urticaria, have you tried antihistamines
