Split or Dubrovnik?

Looking at a villa in Croatia next year for 8 of us. I've never been to Croatia before but I'm impressed by the quality of villa's for the price.

But I'm torn over going to Split (or should I say area's surrounding split) or head more for Dubrovnik, Rovinj or Porec.

We'll be 4 adults and 4 children - children will be 11, 6, 6, 6 (not triplets - my twins and DN who is also 6)

We want a fairly quiet area, but somewhere we can walk or have a short drive to supermarkets, a town with a market or a restaurant or two, but we definitely don't want to be in a bustling city.

I preferred Split to Dubrovnik - it felt like more of a "real place".
I absolutely loved Rovinj, but it's nowhere near either of the other two!

Went to Rovinj years ago and yearn to go back. Absolutely gorgeous, very Italian feeling and easy to visit other towns on the Istrian peninsula.

We have two days in Dubrovnik on July then heading on a ferry to Brac for a week in a villa

We stayed in a beautiful villa near Porec a few years ago.

Although lovely and the scenery was lovely too, we would not go back to that area as they were very racist wherever we went, not just one or two, but generally.
We had our daughter's mixed race boyfriend with us and we were so embarrassed and disgusted by the way he was treated. We felt terrible that we had taken him to Croatia, we had no idea it would be like that.

It is only about 50 miles from Venice and in fact that area of Croatia was Italian at some point in it’s ancient history - I forget the details.

Dubrovnik is such a rip off! Price of a half a litre of beer is 3 times more than Split or Omis, which the latter i stayed at.

Walking on Dubrovnik’s city walls are €35 (£30) - it was £26 when I went there in 2018. Other cities walls are free or no more than £5.

Omis is beautiful. You have the beach, old town and access to the national park for zip lining, hiking, white water rafting. Lots of outdoor activities. I was surprised how expensive Croatia was when I visited last year. A cooked lunch for 4 in Omis with soft drinks was about 120 euros, Dinner was 150 plus.
