Help council tax can I get my money back

Can someone help me with this please . I have learning difficulties so there's stuff that I did not notice /it didn't sink in.

So I get reductions on my council tax . But have been in arrears in the past so payment plans etc . It now says I owe 0 for other years . And I'm upto date with payments for this year.

So the problem is I have been paying 15.00 a week standing order under council tax ref ( 123) this is right. So no issues.

But also I have spend well over a year , could be more. Paying 12.50 and 2 days later 15.00 to the council tax ref. (Abc) this could be from an old address.

It seems like I have been paying 3 sets of council tax.

I'm worried they could say it's my fault for not stopping the standing order. But it really confuses me. Could they refuse to give me back anything I have paid that I did not need to ?

They can transfer it from the overpaid account to the other account, making future payments zero. They didn’t offer me a refund but offered that solution straight away and sorted it whilst I was on the phone.
Phone them, they can be pretty helpful.

If you still have debt to them, I think @BeepyBloke is right and they'd put the money to that first.

I don't have depth to them . All my payments are up to date

Are the payments all to the same council? If so, it should be pretty straightforward to sort this out. Although they might tell you they'll put the overpayment onto the 123 account.

Give them a call and ask. Explain you have learning difficulties and ask for them to be patient and follow up the call with an email outlining the agreed next steps.

Or go to CAB and ask them to help you sort this.

Yeah it's going to the same council. It seems impossible to talk to a person. There is an on line form I can do. But then I'm not sure what council tax number I write in. Do I write in My current council tax number then write regarding council tax number ABC . ?

I'm think if I put council ABC initially it will come up with my old details

I would put old reference. State you believe the debt under this reference has been cleared but further payments have been made Ask how can you reclaim the overpayment as a refund or as credit into your existing account reference.

Gazelda · 29/05/2024 12:16

Yes, put the ABC account number in.

Hello

I live at xxx and pay my council tax weekly against council tax reference 123.

I recently realised that I have also been paying £27.50 per week to account reference ABC in error £12.50 on xdate every month, £15 on xdate every month).

From my calculations, I have overpaid by £xxx. Please advise if you don't agree with my calculations.

Please close account reference ABC and refund the overpayment of £xxx to my bank account 00-00-00 12345678.

I have cancelled all standing orders to account reference ABC.

I have learning difficulties, so would appreciate an email to (email address) with a summary of the actions taken or next steps recommended.

I apologise for this mix up and appreciate your help in resolving the issue.

Thank you so much . I won't be able to add how much I think they owe as my brain won't brain with that side of it. I can do the rest if it though. Thank you so much. 💐
