Newborn clothing advice needed!

Not sure what to buy. Some people have said don’t buy any, some have said buy loads!

DD will be here in the autumn.

I know different shops have different weights on clothing sizes. We are mainly going with Next, so first size is up to 7lbs 8oz, then up to 1m is up to 10lbs.

How many sleepsuits and vests of each size should I buy? Would you buy short or long sleeved vests?

Hey congratulations! I would buy maybe 10 of each long sleeved. They're really not in newborn for long - if you're having a baby shower I would perhaps wait until after that to buy them. I'd also prep with some 0-3 months as you can never tell how big they'll be! Next do great multipacks too so shouldn't have to spend a fortune x

Sorry - short sleeved vests, long sleeved grows x

Unless you live very remotely, and/or are single with no support i would suggest just buying a packet of first size and a packet of 0-3 sleep suits plus the same of body suits starting off then go shopping once baby arrives. I bought first size (up to 8lbs) and they drowned dd so I was given a preemie sized one in the hospital and I went to Asda mid evening once it was quieter the following day and bought tiny baby sized clothes, dd was a star attraction and I came away with all kinds of freebies from the manager Grin. Today you have the added option of online shopping which I didn't

Up to 1 month is just newborn isn’t it? I’d just buy that and not bother with ‘first size’ unless you know baby will be coming early, or likely to be very small based on scans. 7lbs8 is bang on the average weight for a newborn so will fit an average baby for all of 5 minutes. I’d do maybe 10 vests, 10 baby grows in newborn, same in 0-3. Probably short sleeved vests. A couple of cardigans to layer. Order more online as/when needed.

When my first DC was on the way, we didn't really buy clothes. I bought a 3 pack of vests, maybe? DH went to BHS and bought a full outfit complete with cap and mitts after she was born. Friends and relatives gave us stacks of clothing either that their DC had used or brought beautiful clothing as gifts.

We went for mainly up to 1 month with a few newborn thrown in. Even better if you can get hand me downs for the newborn ones

Agree with pp unless you know baby is going to be tiny I wouldn't bother with Next first size its tiny as is and I also found it shrunk a little in wash I'd just go straight to upto 1 month. I'd probably aim to have 6-8 vests and sleepsuits ( I'd go short sleeved vests as long sleeves are torture when then trying to slide their arms into sleepsuits). But again as another pp stated if you're having a baby shower id wait until after that to see what you still need. I went wild in Next sales and thought I bought this year's summer wardrobe 6-9 months but my 7.5 month old is still in 0-3 so I'd also caution against buying anything season specific too far in advance as there's no guarantee how fast they'll grow either .

We bought 0-3 months only because we were having growth scans which indicated a big baby was coming. However when she arrived she wasn't as big as they'd projected (8lbs 15oz) and she just drowned in the 0-3 month ones. DH just popped to Asda when she was a couple of days old and grabbed a pack of baby grows and vests from George in newborn size. We put her in a long sleeved vest and a baby grow on top all the time, as she was a December baby and it was cold. You might be okay with short sleeved vests if your baby is coming in autumn but maybe get some long sleeved ones as well for whenever the weather gets colder xx

Stick just with what you get as gifts. I had 2x newborn size babygrows and 5x vests when mine was born (at 36 weeks... might had had more a week or so later, once I'd started mat leave). They were all enormous on her. As was anything other than size 0 nappies, which are quite hard to find.

A text to a friend from the hospital, and we came home to a stack of tiny baby sleep suits and 2 packs of nappies. A partner can pick stuff up for you, too.

She didn't fit Next "up to 1 month" until she was 3 months old.

You just don't know how big they'll be til they are here, so keep to the minimum and buy once you know.

We bought six short sleeved babygros and six long sleeved sleep suits.

Everything else was given to us by friends desperate to get rid of baby stuff.
