@K0OLA1D there is a very interesting account on YouTube where a mortician answers these sorts of questions - you are buried/cremated in whatever your family take to the funeral directors, so if they take a bra in, you wear it for eternity.

  • Might want to consider telling the family to take in leggings, big pants and a hoody if you have to spend the afterlife in it!

Omg. I hope my nearest and dearest know me well enough to know I would haunt them if they buried me in a bra!!

@Ws2210 How the bejesus do you get them out?!

Just put my thumb and finger up and grab the end...sort of like you would with a mooncup (funnily enough I can't get mooncups in as I find that too awkward and painful). I don't put them that far in and my periods are heavy so maybe that helps. Surely I can't be the only one?!

ChimpyChops · 28/05/2024 21:45

I'm about to start a job in ICU and I just know I will ask this on the first day! 😄

I've never used a Mooncup but guessing they wouldn't see it when washing. Would it start to leak though?

aliasname · 28/05/2024 21:51

Wasn’t this a very early episode of Casualty?

Policeman finds unconscious woman, notices tampon and alerts paramedics? I think it was done as an awareness campaign about toxic shock syndrome.

So they check every woman's vagina who is unconscious?

Not every unconscious woman has this checked, lots of people regain consciousness rapidly and will continue managing it themselves. But if you’re expected to remain unconscious (or they decide to start sedating drugs to keep you unconscious) for a prolonged you would need to be intubated and ventilated to protect your airway, then you’ll be admitted to ICU and it will be checked there.

Probably the sort of thing they check in ITU. Hopefully a Tampon string would be noticed when a catheter is inserted, probably in A&E. Dentures would be seen when incubating or putting an airway in. Not sure about contact lenses, do they have a checklist in ITU??

They chick in ITU, so you don't get a UTI

Natty13 · 28/05/2024 21:56

Both tampons and mooncups show up on a trauma series CT scan. And, as others have said, tampon strings will be seen while catheterising.

museumum · 28/05/2024 22:03

I was just going to ask - surely after an accident you’d be scanned pretty thoroughly for internal injuries?

holidaydramalama · 28/05/2024 22:11

Itsss ve an interesting point. I wonder about mri. What if you were unconscious and had a private piercing.?

Exactly.

You'd be surprised how many dodgy lung nodules or suspicious ovarian lesions get flagged up because someone has crashed into a tree and had a scan.

Theredoubtableskins · 28/05/2024 22:14

There is a doctor on instagram who does a whole series of answers to questions you’re too embarrassed to ask/don’t think of asking. He answered this. They’ll check and remove anything.

ManilowBarry · 28/05/2024 22:15

What about a discreet tattoo -

In case of emergency, pull string.

Can confirm I have removed a patient’s mooncup in A&E 🙋🏼‍♀️

Unconscious patient, I was popping a catheter in and noticed blood but there was no pad in her knickers and no visible tampon string. I’m a mooncup user so decided to check if she had one in, and there it was. It transpires that it is much harder to remove someone else’s mooncup while they are lying supine, especially with gloves on!

Here's a perfect marketing opportunity for 'tampons on board' stickers.

😂

Bluewallss · 28/05/2024 22:31

I’m a nurse.

Never specifically checked, but I’ve noticed it before and removed it. I’ve also had a women in critical condition in A&E tell me they had one in. We removed it after she was intubated and put a pad in for her.

Same with contact lenses and dentures, we just notice and remove.

What about piercings? Not like a nose ring or outer body one. But I have a tongue bar. Would that be removed?

If you needed to be intubated, it would most likely be removed (I’ve never worked in ITU so can’t confirm, but I suspect they would!)

An MRI is not the primary imaging modality in trauma. They would have a CT scan.

How would a policeman know she had a tampon in?

I don’t remember, it was a long time ago. Many years since I watched Casualty, and I could have the details wrong!

but I do remember the raising awareness about TSS

Gettingbysomehow · 29/05/2024 00:18

Yes when I worked in a& e we usually did a quick check. As a rule there would be signs, overflow or tampon strings. I once got told off for not checking as a student.

size4feet · 29/05/2024 07:04

mitogoshi · 28/05/2024 14:31

Just heard back from a&e consultant friend quickly, obviously a bit quiet today Grin (actually was on well earned lunch break) yes they check once stabilised for a long list of things, but he pointed out that number of females of menstruating age unconscious in a&e suddenly is very small.

Women who have periods spend on average 1/6 of their reproductive lives bleeding so it can't be that rare.

Oh really! Well that's interesting that the person who thought to check is someone who uses a mooncup! Maybe it doesn't matter much if they're left in for ages

I just thought it might become a problem if left in for days or weeks or whatever

Pretty sure there would be a smell quite quickly
