This a very strange thing to th9nk about, is there a reason ?

longtompot · 28/05/2024 16:44

Not been in an accident to know, but I do know after several gynaecology related ops I had pads changed by the nurse without my knowledge at the time as I was still a bit out of it, but she told me afterwards

When I first started wearing contact lenses in the mid 80s I was given a card to keep in my purse saying I was wearing them for this reason, but it always seemed silly as they'd check your eyes pretty quickly I guess. They used to get gritty very quickly if I dozed off in them in those days so I guess harm could be done quite quickly, modern ones are much better. It must be fiddly getting the contact lenses out of the eyes of an unconscious person but I suppose there's a knack.

I was going to say that.
It always worried me that I might have an accident, and the hospital would take out my contacts and what would happen to them?? They were so expensive back then.

She’s already said why 🙄

I don't think it's strange. I've thought it before when putting my retainer in.

I assume my retainer wouldn't stay in, so I could wake up from a month long coma to find out my teeth had moved 😱 (light hearted horror face - I'm not actually suggesting that the worst thing about a serious accident and coma would be wonky teeth)

Isitchill · 28/05/2024 16:53

I've always wondered about contact lenses. They were very strict when I had my c-sections, I had to take them out. The anaesthetist said if there was an emergency and they needed to knock me out they didn't want to be worrying about my contacts too.

I don't think a mooncup would be noticeable, no, so that's a good point. Tampon strong would, like PPs mentioned, be noticed during catheterisation but I could see a mooncup going undetected for a while unless you had a full body scan that might show it. It would eventually overflow, but who would know it wasn't just your period starting?
I'm a nurse and although I don't work in hospitals, I'd be surprised if internal vaginal exams were part of routine ITU care.

give examples, OP. Who do you think should know? why might it be an issue? who do you think might check? who do you think might want to know?

Is this something that just popped into your head, or are you basing it on something you read? something that happened to someone you know? are you writing a novel?

Toxic shock ? Infection?

MammaRoly · 28/05/2024 19:17

Crikey! This morning I was thinking about what would happen if I had a car accident as well! But my concern was that DH has never organised breakfast club or after school club and would have no idea what days our DC are booked in. And now I need to worry about crusty eyes from my contact lenses!

Alwaystired23 · 28/05/2024 19:21

My sister was admitted to hospital on a Monday and sedated. On Friday, she still had a tampon from Monday. So it has been known. Between Tuesday and Thursday, she was hallucinating and needed physical care, but I guess as she was young, she didn't get the care she should have.

Ws2210 · 28/05/2024 20:03

I cut the strings off my tampons (or shove them up there with the tampon itself)...May have to stop doing that!

wizarddry · 28/05/2024 20:06

If you're worried put a laminated card in your wallet stating you may have a moon cup.

I've got one for my coil

WHY

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 28/05/2024 20:13

This is way way TMI but I once somehow left a mooncup in for the whole time between the end of one period and the next and only realised when I tried to insert a fresh one preemptively. Gross but I didn't die. I hope this is useful for anyone planning a crash during their period.

Here's a perfect marketing opportunity for 'tampons on board' stickers.

😂

SushiAndRamen · 28/05/2024 20:24

I'd hope not! I'd hope they'd take a bra off if I had one on as well. Imagine needing to wear a bra for eternity!

I might start making notes in case of my untimely demise

LOOOOL @K0OLA1D 😂😂😂

This happened to a friend of mine - she went to her daughter's room one morning and found she was in a coma - she had toxic shock. She called the ambulance but knew her daughter had a period - she knew about TSS and removed the tampon and put it in a bag for the ambulance men. She was told she'd done the right thing. Her daughter survived but was very ill for a long time.

Jeesus that's scary!

Thank you for starting this thread OP - I’ve wondered the same thing (and am not a writing a novel either).

AppleStrudel23 · 28/05/2024 20:46

I heard they check very early on during their assessment because of the dangers of it.

I don't like weeing with it there 😕

LlynTegid · 28/05/2024 14:24

Given your near miss this morning, perhaps you ought to think about concentrating when driving more. Or even having an eye test if you have not had one recently (the one at an opticians, not at Barnard Castle).

🙄 Seriously? You've never once made a mistake? Mrs Perfect!

EnglishBluebell · 28/05/2024 21:00

@Ws2210 How the bejesus do you get them out?!

Singleandproud · 28/05/2024 21:10

@K0OLA1D there is a very interesting account on YouTube where a mortician answers these sorts of questions - you are buried/cremated in whatever your family take to the funeral directors, so if they take a bra in, you wear it for eternity.

  • Might want to consider telling the family to take in leggings, big pants and a hoody if you have to spend the afterlife in it!
