Would a mooncup stem be seen though? Obviously everyone knows what a tampon string looks like but mooncups? I had an ultrasound scan once with a mooncup in and the nurse commented that she'd never seen one in situ before and it provoked quite a discussion on their merits Grin

Well no you can't see it, which is why I was wondering if they start rummaging up there. It's quite high up

I'd never even thought of this until now OP. Now something else for me to ponder at night when I can't sleep 😂

You're welcome ☺️

Same with contact lens, dentures hopefully?

Well fitting dentures will be left (certainly while in A&E) as they provide structure to the mouth which is part of the airway

EasilyDefined · 28/05/2024 14:07

When I first started wearing contact lenses in the mid 80s I was given a card to keep in my purse saying I was wearing them for this reason, but it always seemed silly as they'd check your eyes pretty quickly I guess. They used to get gritty very quickly if I dozed off in them in those days so I guess harm could be done quite quickly, modern ones are much better. It must be fiddly getting the contact lenses out of the eyes of an unconscious person but I suppose there's a knack.

LeroyJenkinssss · 28/05/2024 14:13

um they certainly don’t go checking every woman’s vagina who’s unconscious from an accident! Tampon string would be noticed during catheterisation and removed but a moon cup wouldn’t be checked for. Rest assured though it will be visible on the trauma CT and then be removed.

CammoMammo · 28/05/2024 13:35

If they have to fit a catheter, they’ll probably check. I imagine there are a number of things that need to be checked.

Yes, contact lenses etc

I just thought it might become a problem if left in for days or weeks or whatever

The smell would!

Good point about contact lenses. They could be a real issue if left in.

I expect these are part of the standard admission process for an unconscious casualty once the are stabilised.

belleissmart · 28/05/2024 14:19

I think they must check as I had a petit mal seizure while on my period and woke up in hospital with the tampon removed! Have never felt the need to ask more questions on that, but it was either my mum or hospital staff

BobbyBiscuits · 28/05/2024 14:19

If you are unconscious then you'll be in resus in hospital, and they'll need to put a catheter in so they'll see what's up there.
But so what?
It seems an odd question.
Like someone in my family used to say, 'always wear clean underwear, in case you get run over.'
I was like, 'well they won't be very clean after that then will they?'

LlynTegid · 28/05/2024 14:24

Given your near miss this morning, perhaps you ought to think about concentrating when driving more. Or even having an eye test if you have not had one recently (the one at an opticians, not at Barnard Castle).

EBearhug · 28/05/2024 14:24

It would depend on your flow, but on my heavy days, even with a cup, they'd notice the leakage after a couple of hours. Towards the end of my period, less chance of that happening, but then I might have a pad rather than a cup anyway.

mitogoshi · 28/05/2024 14:25

At the point of catheterisation they will know, it's not that urgent compared to stabilising the patient!

EBearhug · 28/05/2024 14:26

Although they might wonder about internal haemorrhaging on the bad days...

TraitorsGate · 28/05/2024 14:27

Part of the trauma assessment would be checking your pupils so they would see contacts then

mitogoshi · 28/05/2024 14:31

Just heard back from a&e consultant friend quickly, obviously a bit quiet today Grin (actually was on well earned lunch break) yes they check once stabilised for a long list of things, but he pointed out that number of females of menstruating age unconscious in a&e suddenly is very small.

Apollo365 · 28/05/2024 14:33

I get this OP. I often wonder random stuff like this too

YellowHairband · 28/05/2024 14:36

So if they put a catheter in and remove a tampon, do they then put you in some knickers and a pad?

something2say · 28/05/2024 14:36

I would hate this. I cannot bear people interfering with me.

reesewithoutaspoon · 28/05/2024 14:37

If you were unconscious then we would notice contacts while doing eye exams, Tampons while doing cathter insertion and dentures when securing your airway.
Mooncups arent obvious and could easily be missed tbh unless you had a body scan and they showed up.
With the increase in frequency of people using them I suppose it needs to be considered now. But a vaginal exam isn't standard practise for an unconscious patient unless you were specifically checking for injury there.

Here's a perfect marketing opportunity for 'tampons on board' stickers.

Hahahahahaha actually gas 😂😂😂

Jifmicroliquid · 28/05/2024 14:50

This is the type of thing I think about OP. Glad it’s not just me!

K0OLA1D · 28/05/2024 15:03

YellowHairband · 28/05/2024 14:36

So if they put a catheter in and remove a tampon, do they then put you in some knickers and a pad?

Those really attractive netty pants they put you in for surgery I reckon. Or a pad underneath you.

YellowHairband · 28/05/2024 14:36

So if they put a catheter in and remove a tampon, do they then put you in some knickers and a pad?

Pair of disposable or net knickers and a hospital issue pad (horrible cheap thick mattresses) or if on ICU, probably just an inco pad underneath you.

If you were unconscious you wouldn't be too bothered.
