Period is 4 days late but I am definitely not pregnant…

So for the last few months my cycle has been getting shorter and shorter - around 23 days. So some months I’d essentially have 2 periods a month.

But now my period was due 4 days ago and still nothing!! If it doesn’t come before Saturday then I would have had no period in May.

I am definitely not pregnant (not had sex since Feb) and I don’t take the pill or anything. I have lost weight recently - about a stone in just over a month - so it could be that.

I am going on holiday in less than 2 weeks and I am starting to worry I’ll be on for it. It’s not the end of the world, I can wear tampons, but it would be very annoying. I’ve taken the period delay tablet before but my cycle is just a bit all over the shop.

If it just skip a period… is that normal? Or should I go to my GP? I used to have a fairly regular cycle but it seems to be a bit all over the shop right now.

How old are you?

I wouldn't go to the GP just yet, it's more likely to be stress or weight loss related

When my periods become irregular, it was because I had PCOS. Before that, they'd been like clockwork. I'd go to the doctor, it's always worth checking that everything is okay!

I think 4 days is in the realm of normal particularly if you have been losing weight. Although I would be tracking the cycle and noting any other unusual symptoms and going to the GP if they have been disrupted for a while. But ofcourse if you are very concerned or have more pain or bleeding than normal a trip to the GP is probably worthwhile.

In terms of Sods law/ Old Wives Tales The best way to get your period to arrive is to wear white trousers.

If your period has gotten inexplicably shorter for a few cycles, it's quite likely it's just normalising again, which means you'd say, get a period around 28 ish days. 23 days is very short for someone your age. Are there any explanations for the short periods? Hormonal issues? That might also explain the variation.

I can quite often have cycles that are 21-24 days and then they'll go back to 28/29 days or longer, but I'm mid 40s and perimenopausal.

my periods are always different lengths, but within what NHS considers normal. I wouldn’t worry unless you have other symptoms. Losing weight can definitely be a chase.

@Singleandproud yes I track it using Flo which is very helpful. It’s just strange how it was early for a few months and now it won’t start!

@mindutopia yes it’s been strange. I can’t think of any issues no. Just looking back now and my cycle was 24, then 25, 27, 23 and now 32… argh!!

Have you had covid? The two times I have had covid it's impacted on my cycle for a few months before going back to normal.

lalalala01 · 28/05/2024 13:42

@HappierTimesAhead ah yes I did have Covid for the first time ever last August.

Even though the actual covid never affects me that much at the time, it always disrupts my period!

I think you need to rule out pregnancy OP 'not had sex since Feb' isn't conclusive enough
