Anyone had a DBS check recently?

My DBS check has already been with the service for a week and only the first section is "in progress", everything else says "not yet started". Anyone got any idea how long it is likely to take from now?

Have been employed to do some temping work in a school to cover an absence for the coming half term but I am beginning to fear that the school year will be over before I get clearance.

it took a couple of weeks

Depends on the company they use. There is usually a fast track option

IncognitoUsername · 28/05/2024 08:52

I do them for our Church. Usually take about ten days to come through.

HasToStop · 28/05/2024 08:54

Can be two weeks can be over four. Even with a fast track option it sometimes gets stuck at the final check stage of the police checks.

We recently sent off two applications and one was back a week later and the other took four months.

I’m in the same boat as you. Have just applied for a new role, DBS sent off last Thursday, still stuck on Stage 2. My last DBS took a whopping 7 months to come back, the one before that 3 months. Have been given a provisional start date of 7th June and going to be difficult if I cannot start then

Ratatouille1 · 29/05/2024 09:47

10 days for mine ( same address10 years +, )a young cover supervisor at my school took months to get his. I wonder if a lot of changing addresses, living in different police authorities slows it down.

milkysmum · 29/05/2024 09:52

Mine is currently in progress. It was started on the 1st May so it's been 29 days so far. I have another one for work but this is for something different ( childrens volunteer post). Another parent submitted there DBS a week before mine and it came back within 10 days so it really can vary.

What Stage is it on?

I thought that, but I’ve only ever needed to put two main addresses and two student properties. Have never lived abroad or anything :/

My DH needed one recently for a new job, it did take a while (at least 2 weeks), to the stage where he had to call them to chase up. They also sent it to him rather than directly to employer

milkysmum · 29/05/2024 12:04

It's at stage 4 but has been a while now

Timescales will also depend on whether it's a basic or enhanced check. From the start of June there will be thousands of doctors needing clearance so that slows things down.

everlastingpanini · 29/05/2024 12:21

I process enhanced DBS checks for a charity I volunteer for. They take anything from 24 hours to 2 months, IME so far.

MrsAvocet · 29/05/2024 12:25

It seems pretty random. DS and I both volunteer for the same organisation and we had our DBS applications checked at the same Post Office on the same day recently. His certificate landed on the mat 3 days later, mine took 4 weeks. Nothing complicated about mine or anything so who knows why?

Is 7 months quite rare then?

I would say so.
If I recall rightly you can complain after 90 days.

GogAndMagog · 29/05/2024 13:00

Mind took a week recently, enhanced.

Make sure you sign up for the update service within 30 days!!

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2024 13:21

End of last year it took 4 months.

Current one is 5 months and counting. (And that's not an enhanced one and is just for my volunteering role)

KnickerlessFlannel · 29/05/2024 13:24

2 this year have both taken 7 weeks
