Ideas needed urgently: day out with dd8

Decided to take the day off tomorrow (well, today really: tuesday) to spend with dd. I have just realised that the activity she wanted to do is closed tomorrow so I'm wondering what else we could do. Ideally something out of the house but indoors as it's forecasted to be raining. Bonus points if it's not toddler friendly (so something we wouldn't be able to do normally with her little sister there). We need to be back by 3pm to pick up dd2 from nursery so only have a few hours.

She loves anything crafty, dancing and singing, reading but I'm open to anything.

We are in the east Midlands.

If we stay at home I'm thinking maybe baking. Does anyone know any easy and fool proof recipes for something kind of interesting or fun?

Thank you!!

Would she like go karting? There's a good place in Leicester. Or a trampoline place? The one in Wellingborough is really good. They've got a climbing wall thing there too.

Look up some kitchen science? Then lunch out somewhere. Or a trampoline place?

Cinema, there’s 2 new films out, Garfield & IF, stock up on some treats.

Cheaper version of cinema, duvet day with her choice of film, pizza/treats

Swimming

Pony trekking

Making jewellery from a kit

Don’t know your area so no specific ideas beyond finding a museum or gallery that has a permanent or temporary exhibition of craftwork. Or your nearest conservatoire or concert hall might have a midday concert with either solo voices or a choir?

But inside the house - do you own any cookery books? With children of that age who like reading I’ve set them the task of searching through all my cookery books for, say, the best three chocolate cake recipes. Then we discuss and narrow the choice down to one. Go shopping for any missing ingredients and come back and bake - with the child being responsible for reading out the various stages of the recipe, oiling the cake tins, checking weights of ingredients etc, etc. Then we clear up while the cake’s in the oven and set out a very fancy tea. Which would be all ready for your toddler to enjoy too.

The point is the expanding of their reading matter. (In addition to the sheer fun of it.) I guess you could do the same with YouTube if necessary - either way the searching for, and discovery of, a great recipe herself would be much more fun than simply following one provided here.

Luminarium in Nottingham?
sea life centre in Birmingham?
Clip n climb
planet bounce
crazy golf
just get on bus / train (not car!) to a nearby city and go for lunch/ buy new outfit?

Make/paint a pot? Denby Pottery do kid's sessions, I think you need to book but you might be able to book same day.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/05/2024 06:36

What were you going to do?

Are you sure it's closed? Activities that are usually closed on a particular day are often open all week in half term.

Picking an east miss town at random Lollipops paint a pot in Leicester although you do need to book.

We're putting the baby into nursery today and DD8 and I are walking into town, getting Prezzo for lunch (kids eat free) picking up some crafty bits for the rest of the week and going to see If x

Thanks everyone for all the lovely ideas. I'll refer to this thread the next time we get a chance to spend a day together.

So we ended up doing some super cool crafts together in the morning and then went to one of the places suggested on this thread. Awesome day. 😊
