I bought cockles from a cockle stall yesterday. It's usually one of my favourite treats - just plain cockles with vinegar on them - but this time there were several cockles that were very mushy. They all tasted normal, but it was just the texture that was weird (most of them were the normal chewy texture, but there were at least 4 or 5 that were mushy). I've never experienced mushy cockles before.
I freaked out and ended up just throwing the whole lot in the bin in case they were off, but afterwards I looked online and couldn't find any information at all suggesting that mushy cockles is an indication that they are off. In fact I couldn't find anything about mushy cockles at all.
So could anyone shed some light? Does it mean they'd gone bad, or is it perfectly normal for them to be mushy?
