Friend not been in touch for 2 and a half years suddenly has a "business opportunity" for me?

She sent a text message late last night saying she had a great opportunity for me and I could make hundreds of pounds every month for only a few hours work.

I've replied saying I'm too busy for any more work and she's replied telling me to at least give it a try and to give her a ring to discuss.

I'd think it was MLM but all of her social media profiles seem relatively normal - no hint of a sudden desire to off load over priced wax melts or mascara or weird health drinks...

So what else could it be? I'm sure it's too good to be true Grin

Pyramid scheme probably. Take care and if you meet her, don't take your wallet.

DeadMabelle · 26/05/2024 13:55

Does it matter? You’ve fallen out of touch, you’re too busy, and not interested anyway…?

FKAT · 26/05/2024 13:55

MLM. Girl boss / boss babe / live ur best life hun.

Cerialkiller · 26/05/2024 13:58

I'd be very tempted to find out tbh just so I could see how crazy it was, it's easy to say that from behind a screen though 🤗

SpaghettiWithaYeti · 26/05/2024 14:00

Almost certainly some kind of MLM.

There's a travel agent type one I've noticed bubbling up in a few places recently

NotTram · 26/05/2024 14:00

Ignore her

Meadowfinch · 26/05/2024 14:01

Unless she knows you have a particular talent (musician, artist etc) that could conceivably be desirable for one of her friends, I'd say it sounds more like a business opportunity for her.

BringMeTea · 26/05/2024 14:01

Yeah, no.

Saintmariesleuth · 26/05/2024 14:03

I'd also think MLM. It can't be very good if she's run out of tier 1 (family and close friends) marks and is now scrabbling through old friends and acquaintances.

Ignore your curiosity and shut her down

IAmThe1AndOnly · 26/05/2024 14:05

mlm or she’s been hacked and it’s a scam.

Apollo365 · 26/05/2024 14:07

MLM 💯💯

GrandHighPoohbah · 26/05/2024 14:08

I wouldn't have bothered replying. At best it will be nothing you're interested ingiven that she hasn't seen you in several years, at worst you could lose money.

DoreenonTill8 · 26/05/2024 14:09

Just contact her! You could have your very own white merc on your way to Ibiza for a #bossbabe hols in 2 weeks!! Xx

FKAT · 26/05/2024 14:09

She sent a text message late last night saying she had a great opportunity for me and I could make hundreds of pounds every month for only a few hours work.

Worth pointing out that you could do a couple of shifts at Starbucks and make hundreds of pounds. It's 2024, hundreds of pounds isn't a lot.

listsandbudgets · 26/05/2024 14:11

for some reason hacking hadn't crossed my mind - stupid of me really

I am not artistic in the slightest

Being a travel agent sounds fun - will I get free holidays?

I do think MLM but also wondering if I'm about to be offered a new crypto that I should be in at the very beginning as it will only ever go up...

I suppose I'd best ignore her but I am a little bit curious

listsandbudgets · 26/05/2024 14:12

@DoreenonTill8 I can't drive for medical reasons... do you reckon the white merc will come with a chauffer?

OP posts:
motheronthedancefloor · 26/05/2024 14:13

I'd be blunt and point out that the fact she's contacting you out of the blue after 2.5 years suggests its a pyramid scheme and she's desperate. Then block.

CountingCrones · 26/05/2024 14:13

Sounds like her phone's been hacked. My son got a bunch of messages like that supposedly from an old friend.

MILTOBE · 26/05/2024 14:15

Regarding the crypto - what are her special skills that would mean she'd be an expert in this?

listsandbudgets · 26/05/2024 14:17

@MILTOBE I've no idea - I don't think you have to be an expert to try to con people into buying it... though frankly I'm not the one to ask as i barely know my bitcoin from my euro Grin

OP posts:
MILTOBE · 26/05/2024 14:18

No, that's what I meant! I'd just ignore the message. It may well be a scammer or it might be her thinking she's the next billionaire. Either way, ignoring it is the only way to go.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 26/05/2024 14:20

It will be MLM shit, one of my friends was big into it but didn't use her social media, she did it all via various hobby clubs and real life social events she was part of. Invited me over for a drink one day and had a fucking file folder and PowerPoint presentation on why I should spend a load of money on a samples kit and "make a fortune" selling for her.

I actually found it really offensive because I was looking forward to spending some time with my friend, she was using it as an opportunity to try to make money off of me. Things went cold after that.

listsandbudgets · 26/05/2024 14:23

I will probably ignore it....

Can't believe I'm turning down the chance to be a billionaire boss babe living my best life... swanning off on all expenses paid holiday in my Merc...

Suppose I'd better peel the potatoes for dinner and accept my lot Grin

I had similar. Not even a close friend, and hadn't had any contact in years. I'd recently moved to a corporate company and my job title sounded far more prestigious than it really was. I assume she saw it on linkedin.
She invited DH and I to an 'event' where we could make money too! I looked it up separately, and it looked like a charity auction but also selling opportunities. I assumed MLM or timeshare. The tickets were also £200 each just to attend. I never replied!

WoshPank · 26/05/2024 14:42

They're normally an MLM, but maybe it's a hack.
