Have you ever bought a (used) car from a dealership and driven it off same day?

Basically I'm going to test drive a used car at a dealership with a view to buying it next week. I've only ever bought a car through auto trader or similar before so wondering how buying from a dealership works and making sure I've got my wits about me. The car has a decent mileage and one previous owner and comes with servicing and warranty.

I have been driving the exact same model for the last 2 years under a work car scheme, and so I know the model really well and I don't really even feel I need to test drive it but they say you "should" so I thought I ought to. Is this right?

Does one generally make a lower offer on used cars at dealerships? I have no idea.
Also assuming I buy it I'll be driving it away and the dealership say they can arrange drive away insurance. Should I try to get this included in the cost? Is that normal or if not then how much should I expect to pay?

Yes, I have.

You do need to do a test drive.
I haggled on the part-ex on my old car for a better deal.
I called my current car insurer at the dealers and changed the vehicle details to the one I bought, it came into effect immediately.

I have twice. The insurance covers you to get home and should be included in price.

I was fine both times. Just take a moment to familarise yourself with where indicators are... wind screen wipers etc

Best of luck!

We always buy used cars and always negotiate (DH is a professional negotiator). Even if they won’t reduce the price you can try to get them to include extras - protective coating for the paintwork, better tyres, extra warranty etc.

I understand that the second hand car market is very competitive at the moment, so don’t hold your breath.

We have never driven away on the day, usually they do a proper clean and service/MOT only when they actually sell it so it’s usually a day or two later.

I have bought a car at the end of the month , and asked them to keep a hold of it until the 1st of the month, so that i wouldn't be paying a month's tax for a couple of days.
These vehicles already had a mot.

The dealers make the buyer tax the vehicle online prior to driving off. The buyer needs insurance for this. You could buy insurance online to start on the same day .

In the past we've had cars delivered the next day bought over the phone from a main merc deler - cars were often about a year old and one owner - this is the time when most cars came with a 1 year warranty when brand new - but mercs have always offered a years warranty on their used cars - often had to go back in for niggles but it was ok

I did it was delivered from another garage in the group . I did a test drive and took it home the same day on their insurance . I negotiated a years car tax in the deal .
