Hello,

What would you say is the most 'affordable' supermarket at the moment?

Thanks

Lidl and Aldi

mrsbyers · 26/05/2024 16:52

Lidl , it has less branded items than Aldi so less impulse purchases too

ssd · 26/05/2024 16:56

Lidl

WaitingfortheTardis · 26/05/2024 16:56

Tescos, I think it depends on what you buy though.

ZipZapZoom · 26/05/2024 16:57

Lidl is definitely the cheapest around here. Followed by Aldi and then Asda.

WASZPy · 26/05/2024 16:58

Tesco with a clubcard and careful clubcard price choices. Unfortunately.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/05/2024 16:58

Aldi but I think my sister would say Lidl. Depends what you buy - both the most reasonable.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/05/2024 17:05

Aldi (but I have never tried Lidl). I'd much rather shop in Aldi and buy whatever I want than shop in a more expensive supermarket and be careful what I buy (though obviously I realise I'm fortunate not to have to be too careful even at Aldi).

CormorantStrikesBack · 26/05/2024 17:09

Aldi.

Justcats · 26/05/2024 17:10

Tesco with a clubcard or Asda.

EatCrow · 26/05/2024 17:11

Currently researching this Op but Morrisons are now very expensive.

YaMuvva · 26/05/2024 17:11

Sainsburys. Especially with nectar offers on my app. I’ve tried doing a shop at Lidl and Aldi, both were way more expensive than Sainsburys.

I sometimes go to Savers for cleaning and laundry stuff if I happen to be passing though

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 26/05/2024 17:11

out of the British ones - ASDA.

otherwise it's apparently ALDI and / or LIDL

If you sign up to Sainsburys - which I did recently, I got 6 x £6 off when you spend £40 vouchers for the next 6 weeks, plus with the nectar points this is working out cheaply for me!

I'm also looking at Morrisons for the next round of offers, and just got emailed an offer from Ocado re move delivery of M&S cheaply.

I think the supermarkets clearly have been overcharging and have the funds available to give us good offers at the moment, certainly been taking advantage here. However it takes time to investigate and money to drive about/pay delivery charges, so you may not be better off.

PostMenPatWithACat · 26/05/2024 17:14

You are using the wrong term. Affordable varies depending upon individual income, whereas you are actually asking which supermarket people think is the cheapest. Around here I imagine Aldi or Lidl are cheapest. However, if people work full-time, and can't get everything they need from Aldi or Lidl, they become less affordable if the cost of using another supermarket in terms of time and fuel is added in.

Justcats · 26/05/2024 17:14

Tesco price match Aldi. I also prefer Tesco home brand stuff over Aldi and Lidl.

Ragruggers · 26/05/2024 17:18

Sainsbury’s onlne with a green mid week pass.I share with my neighbour.Nectar offers are great.Very happy with the service.

wickerlady · 26/05/2024 17:19

Depends what you're buying.

WindowViper · 26/05/2024 17:19

I don’t find Lidl or Aldi that cheap. It’s becasue the selection there is so random that I can’t meal plan.

I can go into Tesco with a list of what I need for a weeks worth of food, within my budget, and know I’ll come out with it.

OliveK · 26/05/2024 17:21

No lidl near me unfortunately

I think
Aldi
Asda
Sainsbury's
M&s
Tesco/Morrisons

wogjalr · 26/05/2024 17:21

I've no idea how it compares but what I love about Sainsbury's is the personalised nectar prices for the things I buy regularly, they can be a substantial reduction, so got a few £10 off vouchers in January, I get the delivery saver cost back via cash back, Avios points and there's a good range in their own brand stuff so I'm a total convert from Tesco and Aldi (used to shop in Tesco for the Clubcard points before they went shit, and can't stand shopping in person so Aldi is out now).

EasternOrthodox · 26/05/2024 17:22

We always go to Lidl. The quality is fine and even the fruit and vegetables are nice.

Kikibee · 26/05/2024 17:24

Lidl, especially with the Lidl plus app.

user666555 · 26/05/2024 17:24

@YaMuvva I was not expecting this!

Im quite intrigued now! Do they price match? Also is it mostly Sainsbury's own branded products or other branded products?
