Hello,

What would you say is the most 'affordable' supermarket at the moment?

Thanks

Lidl is probably the cheapest for us.

But it’s difficult to get all the free-from things we need there. Sainsburys with the personalised nectar prices is the best for that side of things.

My DD is a student and swears M&S is cheaper for a lot of the things she buys

I think this would probably be true if you were shopping for 1 and just buying basics. It's as cheap as aldi for some things,I was amazed when I checked!

I do a mixture of Sainsbury's and Lidl and find them both really good. Morrisons is good for stuff but it's expensive so only get a few things from there. Don't go to the others.

We've just switched from Aldi to Tesco with club card and Aldi price match, and honestly we're spending the same as we used to.

McKenzieFriend001 · 26/05/2024 22:27

We did exactly the same shop online at Tesco and Aldi on Friday. Aldi came in at £255 and Tesco £360 (even with the club card).

Now Aldi are doing click and collect it's a no brainer for us - despite the clunky online ordering.

Aldi followed by Sainsbury’s. I especially like their personalised nectar offers as it’s stuff I actually buy! Much better than random offers that we wouldn’t really use.

My local is a "local" Sainsbury's, some things are reasonable, they also have decent reductions. They have annoyingly got rid of most things I actually like the the bastards. They replaced my favourite iced coffee with £4 Sugary milk tasting Starbucks muck for £4 grr.

Heron is fine although they have random great things, then never again which is annoying. Morrisons is very expensive, never seem to get out of there without spending at least £50.

Asda is so so, Iceland is OK but limited. Lidl is also fine but for some reason don't really like it. Don't have any other supermarkets within easy distance.

Pixiesgirl · 26/05/2024 22:45

I did see a post on reddit where a standard bottle of hellmans mayo was $5.99. Wtf, do they have worse inflation than us?

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/05/2024 22:55

If you take in to consideration loyalty programmes and transport costs then Tesco is cheapest for us , as we can walk to the store in 10 minutes. It's also a medium sized store so there's no clothing or books to distract us.
Otherwise for us it's M&S, but that's because we get staff discount. However it us a car journey to get there.

Lidl

I would have said until recently Aldi, but I couldn't get everything I needed so was popping here and there picking bits up. Using a clubcard and Aldi price match where possible I've actually saved on my weekly shop by going to Tesco. As I'm not popping here and there to pick up bits I couldn't in Aldi. I even managed to build £20 in clubcard vouchers for Christmas.

MyDeepZebra · 13/01/2025 21:01

I'm another Sainsbury's shopper and find it very reasonable and decent quality.

I buy Aldi Price matched and Stamford/Own Brand products.

Shop from offers (joints of meat are regularly half price for example).

Buy the exact quantity/weight of fruit/veg I need if it works out cheaper.

Personalised Nectar Offers and Nectar vouchers are brilliant.

I don't find Aldi much cheaper at all. And Sainsburys is much better quality. And only 50p for Click and Collect. It's rare that I get offered subs or that products are out of stock. I really am a big fan!

On my way home from Lidl I pass a Waitrose so I often pop in to buy one item and get a coffee. I'm often suprised, well annoyed really, to find that some items are slightly cheaper in Waitrose than in Lidl, or more often the price is the same but the Waitrose packet is larger.

Of course many items are much more expensive in Waitrose, so ideally I would check the prices of everything I need in Waitrose, go to Lidl and return to Waitrose. But life is too short!

There are three Tescos I could go to. The least accessible is considerably cheaper than the easier ones, the mini one is the next cheapest and the really well-situated one of reasonable size is the most expensive.

You are using the wrong term. Affordable varies depending upon individual income, whereas you are actually asking which supermarket people think is the cheapest. Around here I imagine Aldi or Lidl are cheapest. However, if people work full-time, and can't get everything they need from Aldi or Lidl, they become less affordable if the cost of using another supermarket in terms of time and fuel is added in.

Exactly this. Aldi is the cheapest one close to me, but I don’t have a car and would need to pay for a taxi back. I also work full time and don’t want to spend what precious free time I have trying to work out where the equivalents are of my usual shop or finding out they don’t stock them and having to go somewhere else. Tesco with a Clubcard and home delivery works out best overall for me (time and ££).
