Hello,

What would you say is the most 'affordable' supermarket at the moment?

Thanks

You are using the wrong term. Affordable varies depending upon individual income, whereas you are actually asking which supermarket people think is the cheapest. Around here I imagine Aldi or Lidl are cheapest. However, if people work full-time, and can't get everything they need from Aldi or Lidl, they become less affordable if the cost of using another supermarket in terms of time and fuel is added in.

They aren’t using the wrong term at all even if it doesn’t apply to you. I have my shopping delivered so no petrol used .

@YaMuvva I was not expecting this!

Im quite intrigued now! Do they price match? Also is it mostly Sainsbury's own branded products or other branded products?

Yes they price match with Aldi! The own brand stuff is good especially the cheese which is price matched with Aldi and also tastes like Cathedral City cheese

StarDolphins · 26/05/2024 17:27

Also is cheapest. However (imo) not the best value. Things go off far quicker than the other supermarkets so doesn’t end up being cheaper. If I get a bag of spinach from , Tesco & especially M&S/waitrose, I can use the whole bag. Aldi bag would need to be chucked before I’d used it.

lazyarse123 · 26/05/2024 17:29

Every time we've tried Aldi the stuff hasn't lasted. I got some really tasty ham and when I went to finish it off the next day it was green.
I do buy snacks, crisps and flowers in there though if I'm passing one. Also Savers or Home bargains for toiletries and cleaning products but only if I'm near one.

Proper shopping is usually Asda.

DaffydownClock · 26/05/2024 17:29

I use Ocado who price match with Tesco.
I’m at least 9 miles from the nearest Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s or Morrisons so taking into account petrol etc I find Ocado the best.
I think Sainsburys is expensive as is Tesco (poorer quality).
The nearest Asda is 19 miles away, buying online I find the fruit and vegetables are really poor quality and there are too many substitutions.

Darklane · 26/05/2024 17:32

I’ve usually shopped at Aldi & Tesco but lately been going to Asda as one opened nearer than the others. Been very surprised that it’s been cheaper. They currently price match to both Aldi & Lidl, whichever is cheapest on that particular item.

Bluevelvetsofa · 26/05/2024 18:57

The price match that Sainsbury’s and Tesco do, is misleading. Yes, they do match Aldi prices on some things, but a small percentage, according to an expert I heard talking about it.

Aldi brands itself as the cheapest supermarket for three years running. We’ve used Ocado when it’s been the offer, but the sell by dates were very poor and the fruit quality random.

LizTruss · 26/05/2024 19:00

My chef swears by Harrods, and apparently they deliver too.
That saves a job. For somebody downstairs.

Moier · 26/05/2024 19:03

@YaMuvva
I agree.
People think Sainsburys is expensive.. but it's cheaper than Morrisons and Asda.. and Nectar make it even cheaper.
I do like lidl's fresh fruit and veg but it's no cheaper.

willowtolive · 26/05/2024 19:26

Aldi, definitely cheapest and can do a whole shop in there if necessary don't find I can get everything in Lidl

DelilahBucket · 26/05/2024 19:29

Depends what you buy and what you deem good value for money. We switched to Ocado because their fruit and veg lasts so much longer and I was fed up with chucking stuff in the bin because it had gone off. The own brand is much better quality, like the chopped tomatoes are not mostly juice, and M&S products have very little in the way of ultra processed ingredients. That is good value for me, but cost wise it is more.

catlady7 · 26/05/2024 19:30

Lidl

catlady7 · 26/05/2024 19:30

Fruit and veg lasts so much longer in lidl than aldi

DrJonesIpresume · 26/05/2024 19:32

PragmaticDramatic · 26/05/2024 16:52

Lidl and Aldi

This.

Nowhere else comes close. They try, with all their price matching nonsense, but it doesn't cut the mustard with me.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 26/05/2024 19:44

WindowViper · 26/05/2024 17:19

I don’t find Lidl or Aldi that cheap. It’s becasue the selection there is so random that I can’t meal plan.

I can go into Tesco with a list of what I need for a weeks worth of food, within my budget, and know I’ll come out with it.

Yes this. I either do Tescos online with a meal plan or occasionally go round with the scanner do I can see priced. I always end up spending a fortune in Lidl and get a shock at the tills.

Coalfacebigtits · 26/05/2024 19:58

I’d say lidl and Aldi as far as supermarkets go, but the best way to shop if you can afford to is buying in bulk as well as at the major supermarkets . I use a local Asian supermarket for bulk buying rice/ lentils/ spices/ flour etc as well as things like curry pastes / sweet chilli sauce and so on. Also yogurt and fresh chilli/ coriander etc (to freeze). I buy jars of pickles/ horseradish / baby pasta / cheese from an Eastern European supermarket .
So not strictly the answer to the question but I do think it’s the things that liven up the usual meat/ veg/ grains that bump up a shopping bill considerably.

DrCoconut · 26/05/2024 20:04

Lidl has got quite expensive these days and they stopped doing the gluten free items that we particularly wanted to buy. So I go to Aldi usually and then do a top up at one of the others for GF.

Sweetandsaltyburn · 26/05/2024 20:08

Aldi
Lidl
Asda

Also worth checking Farm foods and Iceland now and then.

Zwicky · 26/05/2024 20:21

Aldi or Lidl.

My Lidl is a bit weird, and there is only ever one checkout open, and the staff all sing, but they do have a bakery which is fab and often have better fruit and veg than Aldi.

I like a lot of aldis own brand stuff and ours has self checkout and is really well stocked. It’s super busy so I don’t think there is time for anything to go out of date. I like it because I can get it, do a full shop, and be back at my car within 10 mins.

Tesco is full of clubcard offers and ready meals. 5 aisles of drinks. Ours is always quiet and the fruit and veg are crap. Takes ages to get from the car park to where the food starts. Often very little meat or it’s very short date. It takes ages to shop. They keep their packets of sliced ham in 3 separate places. I go about once a month for things I can’t get at Aldi.

sainsburys - nice but far. Good for the price matched stuff but everything else pushes the price up.

Asda - looks like a documentary set at the end of days. Hideous. Cheapest petrol by miles.

mitogoshi · 26/05/2024 20:22

Lidl, by a fair amount

Zwicky · 26/05/2024 20:22

Aldi and Tesco shit for rice. Just the weird stuff my kids call “school dinner rice” or those packets of pre cooked. Need to go to Lidl or sainsburys or the Asian supermarket

S0livagant · 26/05/2024 20:24

Aldi

mitogoshi · 26/05/2024 20:25

Should add, 5 mins walk so no petrol!

Mytholmroyd · 26/05/2024 20:27

My DD is a student and swears M&S is cheaper for a lot of the things she buys

Caffeineneedednow · 26/05/2024 20:31

Another vote for sainburys with the nectar cards offers. I recently switched from aldi and am finding it cheaper and the fruit and veg are better quality.

I have just bought a delivery pass as I'm finding the shopping online massively reduces my impulse purchasing/ am far more likely to get everything on my list where as previously I would always need to go to another shop as well as Aldi
