My DS is doing this role. He absolutely loves it. It is not however particularly low key. Working in a care home you will be confronted with death on a regular basis and you will have to deal with funeral directors and distraught relatives. You will get attached to the residents and it will be sad when they die. Conversely, depending on the type of home, you will be interacting with some people who have dementia and may have some difficult behaviours. My DS has to deal with aggression, disinhibition, sexual comments.

You need patience by the bucketload and a lot of resilience. Working in a GP surgery, you will be used to dealing with aggression from patients and that will serve you well, but you will face different challenges.

Be open to learning and you will do well.

Thank you so much for the reply - I was working upstairs at the GP role so wasn't customer facing and yes we do have dementia patients in this care home.

Horrible, horrible horrible.

dread waking up every day to answer adult social care calls. Can’t tell them you are looking them up nothing, hate it. A glorified receptionist just transferring. I dread getting up to work knowing others refuse to go onto the line. To late to recognise people with hidden disabilities having to be subject to all this. It’s like torture but we don’t matter.

I lasted 3 weeks in that job - horrible female managers, didn't train me and the work they gave me was tedious and uninspiring and for a office junior, a real come down from a nhs medical secretary role.

Hating trying to sell the care home to the elderly relatives family, it felt exploitive.

So many horrible things about that job. Ppl think grass is greener with private health care it's not.

Pointless induction meetings.

Thankfully got back a job as a medical secretary in a different GP surgery which came as a comprise from last job but it's a medical secretary.job thankfully.

NHS is where I will only work I hope never work in private health care hate the marketing selling part of the role and the rest of it.

I'm sorry it didn't turn out well for you and that you are now back roughly where you want to be. My DS wasn't expected to sell anything, but all care homes are different.

That's good your DS enjoys his job, I think like all care homes are different like I now know GP surgeries are different x
