How much would you expect to drop price when selling a 2nd hand vehicle on FB marketplace or similar?

I've never sold a vehicle before - and indeed never bought one 2nd hand from a private seller (only ex-fleet from a dealer) so it's all new to me!

I'm already struggling to price it because it's not exactly a camper but it's definitely not just a box van (windows / insulated & lined / seat that converts to bed / lights etc etc but no kitchen).

But then added to that I have no idea how much people would expect to negotiate down on a private sale.

FWIW it's quite old (15yrs) so cheap-ish but in good nick as you'd expect of something basically used for travel to events & sleeping, I don't know if that makes a difference.

I guess is quite tricky to price due to more unique nature of it. Maybe have a look on FB for 'vanlife' type groups? They prob have buying/selling bits or could give you a better idea of what to ask or where to sell.

When you say it’s not a camper but it’s not a box van can you be more precise?

  1. does it have a bed in it
  2. does it have a cooker in it
  3. what is it registered under DVLA?
  4. can you stand it in? And what base type?
I agree with PP- there are a couple of vanlife groups that can help. If it’s a VW it will fetch for more money.

I think my starting price is probably ok, I've got 3 people coming to see it today. I guess I was just wondering what would be normal in terms of negotiation on price & what people are likely to expect.

It's lined/insulated & professionally installed rock & roll bed but not high top & no cupboards/ sink etc

Ok that’s still a camper in my book (though appreciate some campsite disagree and say you need a cooker/sink)

I would say 5-10% negotiation. I’ve bought and sold a few but they are more specific vw ones..

Bjorkdidit · 26/05/2024 08:46

There's no normal, it depends on interest and how it's priced compared with what else is available.

If you have 3 people coming you could hold out for the asking price, or even ask them to bid more if more than one person wants it.

Which would be different from no interest where you'd need to drop the price and might even need to drop it further to sell it.

Ok, that's really helpful to know. I'd definitely drop 5% & be really happy for a quick sale tbh

Look up ''webuyanycar' and see what they quote (you are under no obligation but they will send you emails after). Or is there such thing as a blue book anymore?

Make sure there's some bunting prominently displayed in the photos and you can probably charge double 😆

More seriously, what annoys me about ads for self converted campers on FB marketplace is when there are 5 paragraphs of blah about "Enid is our beloved camper and we're so sad to let her go" AND NOWHERE DOES IT SAY WHAT THE MILEAGE IS OR WHETHER THERE'S A RECENT MOT!!

Regarding price, I would look at loads of other ads to see what they're charging, and align yourself with them, but it looks like you're doing that anyway. I think haggling is a personal choice- I like and encourage it, and always have a secret idea of how much I'll go down, and set the asking price accordingly.

Sadik · 26/05/2024 10:14

I promise I've listed mileage, MOT, etc! No bunting but I do have nice pic of us all set up at a festival with awning etc looking very holidayish :)

After all my angst I sold it to the first viewer this morning for the advertised price. Amazing what a sunny BH weekend will do Grin
I feel like I'd pitched it OK though, I had 4 people I know interested (who'd be pricing in the fact they know it's legit & why I'm selling), & only one from marketplace who wanted to view.

Happy to have had a quick sale & all sorted Smile
