Fun breakfast for 4yo niece

WhatNext24 · 24/05/2024 22:58

I have a 4yo niece who I adore but don't see too often (no children of my own). Next week she is coming to visit for the morning with my mum (her nanny). They are coming early and I'd like to give her a fun breakfast. She will probably have had something already but is always interested in another breakfast / brunch a couple of hours later. What could I serve that would be fun? I have dinosaur biscuit cutters so was thinking maybe toast that we can cut into dino shapes. Any other fun ideas please?

Keep it simple - get a variety pack of terrible junky cereal and let her go to town (unless her parents would have a problem with the sugar).

Yeah, I know it's fun but they eat so much sugar already (her and brother) that I just can't bring myself to. I am a boring auntie in that sense and looking for healthy ideas.

In that case, pancakes are a great idea. If you want it to be healthy then have lots of fruits and other toppings in little bowls ready to go and let them do it themselves.

My 5 year old daughter loves pancakes. Heart shape ones are a hit. She then lathers them in Nutella and golden syrup. But I’m sure if you got squirty cream, some strawberries and blueberries, she’ll have a whale of a time.

I love the pancakes and toppings idea, thank you all! And we can use the dino cutters to cut shapes into them tool she'll like that.

With the pancakes you can make funny faces out of fruit and cream. M&S do a chocolate squirty cream, so the face can have white or brown hair, a red jam smile, banana slices with half-blueberry pupils for eyes, and a half strawberry for a nose.

Use the dino cutters to cut out of a slice of bread/toast, and put the slice with the bit cut out in a frying pan and crack an egg into the hole
Double dino

Love these ideas, thank you!

@OMGsamesame she will die for double dino 😀

My dc liked breakfast outside on the patio if you have one.
Banana pancakes are a safe bet. You can cut them up with your dinosaur cutter if your neice is a big dinosaur fan.

If she's going to stay again (without an adult) I'd begin now with practicing for your lie in!
So from experience I'd go for a number of ramekins with assorted fruit in (put in fridge) that can be added now (while you're keen to get up & make pancakes) and for when she's 8-14 ish when she knows that Auntie's house with the great selection of fruit she can add to cereal / porridge / eat whenever (at 6am Sunday morning) independently!

But yes - my DC are healthily sized, but they LOONG for school holidays when they get 'holiday cereal' ie. tiny boxes of sugar x. They're almost adults ( with good teeth!!)

No it’s not, but mine never looks too bad! I opt for peanut butter over chocolate spread & it looks quite good. 😎

Pancakes and a platter of berries, grapes, sliced banana, Nutella and syrup. A little pancake buffet is always a hit in our house.

StarShipControl · 25/05/2024 15:52

Pancakes and strawberries.

LemonBitter · 25/05/2024 15:54

Fruit kebabs!

IggyAce · 25/05/2024 15:58

Nigellas American pancake recipe is easy to follow and a big hit in our house, I serve with a little maple syrup banana and blueberries.

Mumofyellows · 25/05/2024 16:09

Pancakes for sure!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/05/2024 16:32

Update for you all. Just had a lovely day with my niece. I had planned the pancakes for breakfast, bought all the ingredients plus lots of berries to make funny faces on them. She turned up at 8AM and cheerfully told me she'd just had pancakes for breakfast at home!

Obviously it didn't matter - we had a fab day doing crafts, blowing bubbles outside and making dinosaur biscuits (so the cutters did get some use). She also ate ALL the berries as snacks. Two big punnets went down like nothing.

Thanks again for the lovely suggestions. Another day I'm sure she would love pancakes or Bluey toast.

She's adorable. I'm such a smitten auntie :)
