What can you no longer do?

I’ll start. I have donated blood since my university days (80’s). I can’t do that now as I was diagnosed with cancer in. 2022. It’s strange, but this is a thing that really upsets me.

Op my mum was hit hard by no longer being able to give blood when she got cancer as well. I can remember how upset she was - she’d got her silver award, and knowing she’d never get gold devastated her. 😔 I hope your health is good now.

For me, horse riding. I learnt when I was three, and although I was never lucky enough to have my own horse, it was always something I did when I had the opportunity. Then when I reached my forties I suddenly lost my nerve. I couldn’t do it any more. I no longer felt safe. So now I just enjoy looking at them.

Give blood (transfusions)
Drink wine
Eat a whole load of delicious things.

TheChosenTwo · 23/05/2024 22:28

A crab 😭 it used to be my drunken party trick to go into a crab and then gracefully get back out of it. Last time I tried it I pulled something in my dodgy back and I was out of action for a month.

A rolly-poly. Used to be so easy.

Hoglet70 · 23/05/2024 22:32

Cough, sneeze or laugh without wetting myself!

I also cannot do the splits anymore. I think the coughing thing bothers me more!

Focus on a book. I seem to have lost the ability to read and enjoy any book.

I thought this too but turns out l wasn't reading the right books for me!

GellerYeller · 23/05/2024 22:35

Eat white bread.

With everyone else on the reading! Well I read constantly but it’s nothing substantial.

Child’s pose in yoga. I remember in my 20s watching older people fail to get into it completely and wondering how this was possible. Now my head is inches away from the floor and my bum even further from my heels. Trying to reverse this now with daily practice!

Just tried this and surprised myself and nutted the rug 🤕 Good old hypermobility - what it takes away with one gnarly hand...

ZiggyZowie · 23/05/2024 22:36

Have sex

Since husband had brain damage in May 2010.

I am his carer and we are like housemates,a bedroom each.

It’s difficult for me to walk without shoes on now (feet went flat at menopause). I can do it, but it’s uncomfortable. Having a shower feels really weird. It’s like all the padding under my feet has gone.

Yep. There was a thread on here saying ‘there’s no excuse not to take your shoes off’ and I thought, how bloody ableist.

TimeforZ · 23/05/2024 22:38

Jump out of bed in the morning;g. I used to be an annoy8ng person waking up full of go. Now my ankles hurt for the first 10 minutes or so, and I have to start slowly. I hate it

beergiggles · 23/05/2024 22:40

Swim, the water upsets my ears.

It might be quicker to list the things I can still do 😂.

In the spirit of this thread I'll stick to the "rules".

I cannot walk unaided, I use rollators.

I cannot go up or down steps without human help.

I can only do one task a day. So, I decide if it's a day to shower, or put washing on, or make myself a meal. Only one of these each day is possible.

I can no longer go on holidays alone.

I cannot open jars, get some medication out of their packaging. Same with tins, spray deodorant.

the list really goes on and on. I don't dwell on that. I look at my poor body and just think that it got me through a pregnancy and three rounds of cancer. It's got a right to collapse. It's done very well by me. It would be ungrateful to now rage against it.

almost like I'm feeling "my body has taken care of " me" ( whatever I perceive " me" to be) it's now my minds job to care for my body. My body has done it's best. I cannot be sad about that.

What an incredible attitude to have. I am going to try and be more like you, you sound amazing, thank you Flowers

WearyAuldWumman · 23/05/2024 22:43

I'm 64 and can no longer eat gluten, most dairy, apples, raw onion...

Well, I can eat them - but I suffer afterwards. Have also had to cut back on coffee and chocolate, which may not be entirely bad.

Rainbowshit · 23/05/2024 22:44

Play tennis, run, kneel down. My knees are fucked.

Gagagardener · 23/05/2024 22:44
  1. Go barefoot outdoors. As a teen in the 1960s I walked miles barefoot. (I still enjoy not wearing footwear indoors, though.)
  2. Dance Gay Gordons or Dashing White Sergeant without getting really out of puff.
  3. Sing, since Covid. I used to sing Big Works in choirs that gave concerts in cathedrals; now I sing Sunday hymns in the way Rex Harrison performed in My Fair Lady.
  4. Expect anyone reading this to understand my references. But please believe me that being in your late 70s doesn't mean you don't miss walking outdoors barefoot, whirling around a dancefloor holding hands with strangers or the joys of choral singing.

Run - or go on a trampoline! - without wetting myself!

That sounds tough. Can I ask your age?

NewName24 · 23/05/2024 22:50

Wear gorgeous high heeled shoes

Read tiny print on labels, or T&Cs

Get up from the floor without using my hands

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/05/2024 21:32

Eat whatever I want (which is a lot of high calorie food) without putting on an ounce.

Well, it was a good four and a half decades 😌

Edited

But the diet industry tells us its calories in calories out and it's the same for everyone!

It's clear that in reality this is not the case, and refreshing to hear someone say that they were able to eat everything and no effect! 😊

ThankYouAgainAgain · 23/05/2024 22:52

I had a lot of therapy in my 40s, and I have lost a lot of my inhibitions about telling people to go take a run and jump and that has actually improved my life a lot.

Also my short term memory went a bit wrong post covid and that really helped to dial down anxiety because now when I see things that scare me, I immediately forget what they were.

So on balance, I think I have lost mainly things that I didn't want or need.

I have lost a lot of physical stuff, but I'm kind of hoping that some of it might come back now I'm not stressed out of my mind all the time.

merrymelodies · 23/05/2024 22:53

Stay up past 2:00 without feeling like shit the next day.

MyGreenFinch · 23/05/2024 22:54

fairfat40 · 23/05/2024 22:37

Yep. There was a thread on here saying ‘there’s no excuse not to take your shoes off’ and I thought, how bloody ableist.

Just today I popped round to some acquaintances for something. I know they have a no-shoes house and I waited at the door saying sorry, I can’t take my shoes off. They both immediately insisted I come in with my shoes on. So lovely of them, I felt a little bad about it but I really do hobble without shoes and it was so nice that they understood.

StMarieforme · 23/05/2024 22:55

For all those getting up in the night- I have this when I eat a healthy diet inc fruit, but not when I'm surviving on rubbish! 🤷🏻‍♀️

frecklejuice · 23/05/2024 23:00

I can't do up my jeans

I can't see my fandango!

I can't fall asleep within seconds of getting into my bed.

I can't read a book because I have no interest/inclination.

I can't eat bread.

OlympicPimples · 23/05/2024 23:06

Sleep through the night…either the Ddog wakes me for a wee or I wake her when I go for a wee (we grumble at each other in the dark!)

Take anti inflammatories, eat curry, or anything minty or drink champagne… I get raging heartburn and reflux for days afterwards.

Drink alcohol, it makes me nod off, especially after a lunchtime drink

Eat anything too crunchy or tough… spend my days hanging on to my teeth so even the cornflakes have to soak for a bit before eating😵‍💫 Very careful with crusty bread, peanuts etc.
