We need to have enough tinned food and bottled water to be self sufficient for three days

There’s a thing in the Times about the Prepare campaign - people need to be prepared for risks like localised flooding, another pandemic, a mass cyberattack which cuts off the internet, disruption to UK space systems that affect GPS signals, conflict and nuclear attack.

I must admit that my first thought was that there are countries in the West Indies who have these sorts of rules - mainly in case of hurricanes. It probably would be useful to have bottled water if we had flooding and the mains water would be turned off. Am a bit horrified by the mention of nuclear war but perhaps this has been overly highlighted by the Times.

Have you seen this? What do you think?

Hasn't this been advice given previously?
I think kn previous generations people tended to keep batteries, torches, extra of everything just incase, so maybe the reminder is good.

Most of our Water supply has had contaminants spotted in it since 2022 it just wasn't widespread knowledge. I think tbh I will stop drinking tap water, but I'm holding off on sticking up, just until the parasite news wears down a bit...

I think its gonna be a bit like covid times with bare shelves with information to stockpile some meals coming about

@hjrl - what does this mean ? what is the significance of May ?

I assume the poster means that November would make more sense as it precedes 3 months of wintery weather which might bring flooding, storms and snow.

Dashel · 23/05/2024 00:26

We live rurally and have our own well and large water tank and filters. It’s been a very long time since I had less that a couple of weeks worth of food in when considering the fridge, freezer and cupboards.

I can’t walk to a shop and like to know I would be ok being snowed in for a week or if I got flu. Thats what I prepped for not major disaster. We were fine when Covid hit for a while so it was handy.

I get that not every one has bottled water, but surely most people have enough food for three days at home? Even if it’s beans and pasta.

libbytrois · 23/05/2024 00:28

More drip feeding by press to get us on war footing following talk of entering a pre-war war climate by the likes of Grant Snapps. Much talk of conscription too. Worrying.

Woozerbug · 22/05/2024 22:56

Not new advice. They issue it every now and then.

Announcement I assume has something to do with Rishi Sunak’s project fear. He’s been wibbling on about dangers on the horizon that only the Tories can deal with. Like they did Covid. And the economy.

Perhaps it's so people will spend more on prepping items, tinned food, candles, stoves wind up torches etc.
It will drive inflation up just in time for Labour to get in. Tories "See, Labour is bad for the economy" Hmm

Delphiniumandlupins · 23/05/2024 00:37

I always have enough tinned food to feed my whole street for a month. Don't buy bottled water because our tap water tastes better. If I did buy water presumably it goes out of date eventually so I would have to keep buying it?

HolyGrapefruit · 23/05/2024 00:37

In January 2020 I had 72 rolls of loo roll stashed under the bed with Brexit in mind - I was extremely grateful for this stockpile when it all went crazy with the panic-buying at the start of Covid.

Barney16 · 23/05/2024 00:41

My DP is always banging on about this. Let's buy in more food, let's get tins, we need water butts, should I get a camping stove? Despite lots and lots of talk his preparedness, to date is ONE FRAY BENTOS PIE. Come the apocalypse I personally would rather take my chances with zombies/virus/nuclear fallout.

EeewDavid · 22/05/2024 21:16

I don’t like it. Feels like they know stuff we don’t :(

Plenty of other countries have had this advice for their citizens for a long time, so I wouldn't be too perturbed. It's sensible, really. I used to be a bit of a prepper so have most of it but let the water stocks slide so should probably replace those but we're moving in a few months so will be after that. Not moving 3 days worth of water 300 miles!

PosyPrettyToes · 23/05/2024 00:50

Even the daily mail comments - home of the panic inducing, xenophobic troglodytes - has seen through this one.

People who are scared cling to what they know. They don’t vote for change.

Foxyaus · 23/05/2024 00:52

We live in rural Australia, miles from town.
We have our own coolroom and butchering set-up, multiple freezers, generators, extra diesel, and an extensive stockpile of necessities.
We watched everyone fall apart through covid, our district supermarkets were stripped bare by bus loads of city people at the beginning and every time travel bans were paused.
We still have supply issues.
People were literally fist fighting over toilet paper!
Three days supply is not nearly enough.
And don't forget to buy chocolate 😀
Trust me, crisis does not bring people together, it just makes them selfish.

Anyone else wondering what the hell this means? Strange news articles on most outlets about this PREPARE campaign, it’s very odd. are they expecting an attack? I know a lot of companies seem to have been having payment issues and delivery problems the last few months so could it be cyber attack? 3 days food in a nuclear attack is pointless I’d rather get vaporised and be done with it. The sun has been behaving strangely too, maybe a CME disrupting the power grid or communications? It’s not normal the northern lights can be seen in the UK as widespread as they have been. Very odd indeed.

or maybe a bluff as part of project fear to make Rishi seem like a safe choice?

Taking your worries one by one:

The nuclear threat is increasing due to the wars dragging on, but nowhere near critical. It's been this high before, lots of times.

Back when I was a kid, everybody was "Prepared" to an extent. Our parents had to do it during WW2 and it had just become a habit. The pandemic showed how little preparation there is nowadays - organisations, companies and households have stopped keeping backup stores. Stuff is going wrong more often at present, with wars interrupting supply lines and cybercrime bringing systems down: it makes sense to go back to maintaining a store cupboard, just in case.

The sun has been behaving strangely! It's just been through an intense period of solar flares, the biggest since March 1989. The CMEs and resulting geomagnetic storms caused the far-reaching auroras (which I didn't see because it was bloody cloudy, as usual).

The same phenomenon caused a lot of power outages and some electronic systems glitched or were paused for safety's sake. Where I live, we had six power cuts over two days. There were quite a few effects worldwide.

Solar storms and troublesome world events aside, the rest of what's going wrong in the UK is thanks to this government's mishandling of nearly everything! I would think it very likely they want to generate a sense of "They are out to get us" to divert attention from the fact that they are the "They". Vague warnings uttered in dark tones should do the trick for their more gullible supporters, just in time for Saint Rishi to offer himself as the safest pair of hands to guide us through the difficult times caused by his own shitshow.

TLDR: Don't worry, buy tinned curry 😀

I live on soda water & peppermint cordial, I buy in bulk, so usually have around 24 litres in stock, I won't go thirsty. If the outgoing government sorted the water companies out, we wouldn't be worrying about storing water. They are recommending 10 litres per person per day to allow for washing etc, so 30 litres per person, can you imagine a family of 6 storing 180 litres of water just on the off chance there would be a disaster?

just a thought could you fill up empty bottles from the tap and store for months or is that a no no
ta

No, sorry. Listeria, among other things.

I've got water purifying tablets. With those and some coffee filter papers, you can drink river water so they should be good enough for grubby tap water.

Bushwhacked20 · 22/05/2024 23:43

If we're going to get nuked I'd rather just drive towards the light, thanks, and hope it's quick. Those of you younger than about 45 might like to watch a little film called Threads if you're wondering why I have this plan.

great film though ive just read somewhere that nuclear war would far far gar worse if thats possible

imtryingtoleave · 23/05/2024 01:51

bloody hell please let my new patio be finished and get some use before impending doom

is it worth getting my roots done in a few weeks

being serious i hear marks and spencer do a good stewed beef in a tin,any feedback on that pls

I’m not sure the Tories will necessarily be the official opposition on the 5th July. I think the meltdown could be that bad.

petermaddog · 23/05/2024 02:49

where we live its normal for at least 2 weeks water food meds etc and not frozen one of our giggles is about people where my other half works people buy bunches frozen meals. usually if the storms come the power goes too since if a nuke or a bad storms hurricanes.i love all of the screens die😁

LeilaLettuce · 23/05/2024 03:07

No point in having freezers full of food if electricity goes down .

slore · 23/05/2024 03:12

World War 3 has been planned for 2025 for decades, if not centuries. They are just slowly preparing the public to make it look natural rather than contrived.

I'm dreading it.

Pixiesgirl · 23/05/2024 03:16

I'm, like an anti prepper, have a candle somewhere... Get food daily as I need it, oh well I'd be fucked.

You don't need to buy bottled water, you just fill containers from the tap and store it. Every few months you can tip it out and replace the water.

Honestly, lots of countries give advice to do this sort of thing, it's actually quite sensible.

Wow - are the people who have been planning it for centuries still around to choreograph everything?
