We need to have enough tinned food and bottled water to be self sufficient for three days

There’s a thing in the Times about the Prepare campaign - people need to be prepared for risks like localised flooding, another pandemic, a mass cyberattack which cuts off the internet, disruption to UK space systems that affect GPS signals, conflict and nuclear attack.

I must admit that my first thought was that there are countries in the West Indies who have these sorts of rules - mainly in case of hurricanes. It probably would be useful to have bottled water if we had flooding and the mains water would be turned off. Am a bit horrified by the mention of nuclear war but perhaps this has been overly highlighted by the Times.

Have you seen this? What do you think?

I think the three days will relate to the risk of a total electricity black out.

https://www.theblackoutreport.co.uk/2023/06/13/black-start/

Basically in theory they should be able to get up to half in 24 hours but it could take a few days.

And obviously if you're in an area where (for example) your water is pumped, you're going to lose water immediately. Water companies won't be able to process drinking water etc.

sp1ders · 22/05/2024 23:01

They're probably expecting an infrastructure attack.

Back to buying pasta, toilet rolls and searching for paracetamol 🙄

FrancisSeaton · 22/05/2024 23:02

It's a very strange amount to specify- in event of nuclear attack you would need a lot more than three days worth. Floods well who knows how long you'd need supplies for. Cyber attacks- again why three days?

mathanxiety · 22/05/2024 23:12

I have a little stockpile because we get the odd polar vortex here.

I keep TP, a gallon of water (and I fill a big tub when extreme cold is forecast as pipes can freeze), and in anticipation of no gas or electricity, I keep chocolate, dried fruit, crackers, beef jerky, nuts, peanut butter, and tins of tuna.

I normally have about two weeks worth of pasta, rice, frozen veg and fruit, and meat/fish in the house. Also flour, sugar, dried buttermilk, dried potato flakes, cocoa, and dried milk.

TheChosenTwo · 22/05/2024 23:25

We could survive for 3 days although it wouldn’t be amazing food wise, we get a big shop weekly and do a butchers run, the larder cupboard things are full and we have plenty of bread flour and loo roll, oh and also a lot of cheese.
We probably nip into a supermarket two or three times a week to get extra bits for dinner.
Can’t be arsed to get panicked about a nothing scenario, we are not people to start stockpiling (I don’t even know what this is about 😂).
I don’t buy bottled water either. We’ll just take our chances as we have for every other forecasted disaster that hasn’t happened and yet none of us went hungry or thirsty.

OrganicCrunchy · 22/05/2024 23:26

They probably just want to worry us so we buy more and help the economy.

gamerchick · 22/05/2024 21:50

Do you have an alternative to run your freezers if the power goes out?

Tbh I'm more alarmed at the tap water thing than nuclear war. I don't want to survive a nuclear war ta.

Actually I've got a generator.

LittleTalkingMan · 22/05/2024 23:32

Snerl · 22/05/2024 20:55

I passed an MOD convoy carrying nuclear warheads yesterday so maybe they're onto something...
(Mostly joking. In seriousness, it's probably not a bad idea to have a few days worth of stuff in the house. But I assume most people do anyway? I don't go to the shop every day!)

My friend is usually one of the police in the convoy and they happen weekly, just to put you at ease x

GuppytheCat · 22/05/2024 22:10

I accidentally ordered three times as much dog food as I meant to, so one of us will be fine for months.

😂

MercyDulb0ttle · 22/05/2024 23:39

But there won’t be a nuclear war. Will there? 😢 Worrying now.

Im just getting myself flexible enough so I can kiss my arse goodbye

Have you seen my cupboards? You cant open them for risk of Lidl's special weeks (greek, spanish, italian, take your pick) tins and bottles all falling out

I'll be dining on those anchovies and fancy popcorn for years

Lol!!...this is me .
I haven't made any particular disaster plan I just enjoy buying /hoarding "essential items".
What with the packed cupboards ,the solar powered camping radio ,the petrol generator, the gas stove with 12 cans of fuel ,and the chemical toilet I bought for one camping trip....I am probably the most prepared woman in the uk !...will all be great unless piles of cash are required as my stocks of that are depleted !

Bushwhacked20 · 22/05/2024 23:43

If we're going to get nuked I'd rather just drive towards the light, thanks, and hope it's quick. Those of you younger than about 45 might like to watch a little film called Threads if you're wondering why I have this plan.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 22/05/2024 20:57

Honestly I can't imagine only having 3 days supplies - what if you get sick and for some reason can't get a home delivery shop?

I think it's an excellent idea for everyone who can do it, but of course it won't help anyone who can't afford to have 3 days food, and they are likely to include a lot of very vulnerable people.

I keep around a fortnight's worth of tinned and dried food. Not bottled water, it's always out of date before I finish the pack, but I do have chlorine tablets.

I used to have emergency gear like wind-up radios and torches, solar chargers, camping stove with gas, survival blanket. Ditched the lot because it's just more stuff and I'm not interested in the kind of future this implies. That said, I do feel it makes sense if you're young, healthy and/or have children.

I'm by no means a Prepper but it's not very sensible to be so dependent on the modern world that you couldn't manage for a couple of weeks.

FFSNorman · 22/05/2024 23:55

Last week he said ‘dangerous times ahead’ Today the election. Translates as : were as desperate as fuck and all that’s left is to scare people to hopefully vote for us.

Judging by the level of intrusiveness of the press, I very much doubt there is a news blackout around a imminent nuclear war.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/05/2024 00:01

Loving this thread and also wish I hadn’t clicked on it tonight. I too had a Brexit stash that served us well in lockdown but I’m not as on it these days and have two children to feed now. Instead of going to sleep I’m going to buy tinned fruit at Asda. If shit kicks off I want peaches as well as chickpeas.

Are we talking no power so my two freezers are pointless, just tins, dry stuff and UHT? I don’t have any water but I do have wine and a lot of loo paper.

insidenumber9 · 23/05/2024 00:05

The story is nothing but Tory scaremongering, because the election is coming up.

I still have nightmares since seeing that

Hence Im learning to kiss my arse goodbye

Living through the cold war was bad, living now is scarier still. At least during the cold war I was still a child and didnt really comprehend

When The Wind Blows is just as scary without the gore

AdaColeman · 23/05/2024 00:09

Watching the Northern Lights the other night reminded me of the beginning of 'Day of the Triffids', so I've been checking over my store cupboard.

l've got plenty of tins of sardines and tins of beans, but I'm a bit low on bottled water. On the bright side I've got enough ingredients to make Negronis and dry martinis in bulk, though I must add olives and maraschino cherries to my next Ocado order! 🍸 🍸 🍸

Anyone else wondering what the hell this means? Strange news articles on most outlets about this PREPARE campaign, it’s very odd. are they expecting an attack? I know a lot of companies seem to have been having payment issues and delivery problems the last few months so could it be cyber attack? 3 days food in a nuclear attack is pointless I’d rather get vaporised and be done with it. The sun has been behaving strangely too, maybe a CME disrupting the power grid or communications? It’s not normal the northern lights can be seen in the UK as widespread as they have been. Very odd indeed.

or maybe a bluff as part of project fear to make Rishi seem like a safe choice?

Bluebellsinthewind · 23/05/2024 00:13

I used up all my stock during Covid times. Might start picking up one or two bits to put away again in my Brexit/Covid/lockdown/whatever fucking next disaster cupboard.

Do you think on pay weekend this month, people will rush out buying stuff. I am having Covid toilet roll flashbacks Confused

godmum56 · 23/05/2024 00:15

I used to work with a New Zealander. She couldn't believe that we didn't keep stuff around in case of a natural disaster. I keep a go bag packed too, nothing fancy, a few clothes, first aid kit, loo roll and water purification kit. Then there was the Whaley Bridge disaster, a woman on telly evacuated with no clean clothes, not even spare underwear....I may have to leave my home but at least I will have clean knickers!

The prepare campaign has been going for years. I think its more about climate chsnge than war (I hope)

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 23/05/2024 00:20

3 days would really be pointless in some of those situations, you'd need a lot more supplies than that. People can survive on a lot less food for a couple of months, water is much more problematic. My XH has water purification tablets and a water purification straw that can last for a long time. They're probably a good thing to have on hand, camping stores have them. Ive got my own disaster supply of food already attached to my body, I figure Im good for a couple of months there 😜. Between allergies and SEN we all have pretty restricted diets so not much canned goods we can use. I have a supply of cereal, noodles, uht milk. A big freezer full of food, but in a lot of disaster situations that's not very useful. It might be good for 3-4 days without electricity.

I saw this in the morning on Sky news page and started wondering what they knew that we didn’t. Now I know — GE is coming.
It feels like Tories are trying to convince us that we are going to have unrest and catastrophe if Labour will get to power. So we will need to prepare medicines, tinned food, bottled water, batteries…

Yep - sounds very much like it is!
