We need to have enough tinned food and bottled water to be self sufficient for three days

There’s a thing in the Times about the Prepare campaign - people need to be prepared for risks like localised flooding, another pandemic, a mass cyberattack which cuts off the internet, disruption to UK space systems that affect GPS signals, conflict and nuclear attack.

I must admit that my first thought was that there are countries in the West Indies who have these sorts of rules - mainly in case of hurricanes. It probably would be useful to have bottled water if we had flooding and the mains water would be turned off. Am a bit horrified by the mention of nuclear war but perhaps this has been overly highlighted by the Times.

Have you seen this? What do you think?

Very normal advice here in Sweden, people are encouraged to have water, tinned food, torches, medicines and cash available, just as a precaution. Fwiw I think they’re trying to prepare people for possible attacks / sabotage on infrastructure, rather than military attacks of the kind seen on Ukraine and Palestina.

Our neighbours were horrified that we don’t bother, I did point out we’re a two minute walk from the metro and a supermarket, so we’re unlikely to get snowed in unexpectantly. Plus I pointed out that nowhere would take cash anyway!

GivePeaceAChance · 22/05/2024 21:44

We were advised to do this in Oklahoma during typhoon season so I’m used to this.
Lived in HK as well so did it there too for the same reason, especially as I lived on Lantau, before the bridge.

We were well prepared for covid from experience.
Its a good thing.

I would assume no electricity so frozen food might spoil and be no good.

Yes, it says non perishable food that doesn’t need cooking - so I can’t rely on my stock of frozen chili.

I've got 2 full freezers and lots of tinned and dried goods and could manage for 2 months if I had to but I've only got 1 x 5 litre large water and about 10 small bottles. DH has just remarked we'd have to drink wine because we've got more wine than water. 🤣

Actually you’ve raised a good point.
We rarely stock water but we do have lots of gin 🥳

Bjorkdidit · 22/05/2024 21:48

We've been preparing for nuclear war and related hazards like a leak from a nuclear power station for decades, its really nothing new.

There are people who've made an entire career of preparing for it, and there's regulations that require councils and other bodies like the emergency services and public health departments to have plans in place and to exercise them regularly.

Do you have an alternative to run your freezers if the power goes out?

Tbh I'm more alarmed at the tap water thing than nuclear war. I don't want to survive a nuclear war ta.

What use is an extra tin of beans going to be if we're getting nuked?

I can understand stocking up in case of flooding etc. But surely if nuclear war breaks out we're fucked anyway?

Depends where it lands.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 22/05/2024 21:53

Non perishable food that doesn’t require cooking?

Chocolate then.

Excellent.

TheBunyip · 22/05/2024 21:56

I’d rather go out with the bang than with a whimper eat beans

Loafbeginsat60 · 22/05/2024 21:58

I might get some water purifying tablets then as we have a stream through our land and a loch up the road.

I have plenty of food for a week and more in the freezer. Eggs from the chickens and I guess we could all start eating lamb (sorry sheep) and beef (sorry cows) if it got to the point that we couldn't buy food?

Maybe I should plant some potatoes

We have a generator that could run the freezer if needed and I'm sure there is gas somewhere for a stove. Might go and see.

Could always cook on a fire we have plenty of wood and a fire pit. So I suppose we would survive

Toilet roll! Only got about ten of those....

suki1964 · 22/05/2024 22:05

Ive been prepped for years

Not cos Im living in fear of anything, but cos I live real rural and having survived a week in winter with no electric - and therefore no heating/hot water and food going to waste in the freezers, and then frozen pipes, we have survival rations , candles and matches, camping stoves, wind up lamps, solid fuel heating etc etc etc - as well as a supply of dried and canned food, water - although there is a well next door is needs really must

Also do the basics of making sure phones are charged , battery packs are charged and we do have a diesel supply as well, not gallons, just always keep 30 litres tucked away

EggcornAcorn · 22/05/2024 22:06

It's the Oh Fuck Rucksack all over again*

#preppers

*we used to call it the OFRS back in the olden dayes here on MN

I saw this in the morning on Sky news page and started wondering what they knew that we didn’t. Now I know — GE is coming.
It feels like Tories are trying to convince us that we are going to have unrest and catastrophe if Labour will get to power. So we will need to prepare medicines, tinned food, bottled water, batteries…

GuppytheCat · 22/05/2024 22:10

I accidentally ordered three times as much dog food as I meant to, so one of us will be fine for months.

Aussieland · 22/05/2024 22:11

I went to some education for work on radiation injuries. I always thought it was bullshit that just staying inside for a couple of days would make a difference but actually if you are in the borderline areas of fall out and can stay in with your windows shut for a couple of days and have non contaminated food and drink it might well make the difference. Plus by then hopefully someone will come and get you if the country is functioning in any way

4thJuly2024 · 22/05/2024 22:11

I've been trying to run supplies down, but it might be a good time to take stock & re stock.

The guidance cross references to National Risks.
Funnily enough there’s no mention of a general election on there, 😁😁
Heres a list of risks from it.

im aware it’s more boring than your thoughts

This. Make the silly voting public paranoid enough and they will go for 'better the devil you know' rather than risk change.

Rockschooldropout · 22/05/2024 22:17

I’m well stocked as I live quite rurally anyway and we frequently have power cuts etc
As far as stocking for survival after a nuclear strike .. I’ll leave that as I live slap bang in between an American and RAF airbase so it woukd be a quick exit

Auburngal · 22/05/2024 22:19

I have plenty of food at home. Always have done which was a blessing during the selfish shelf stripping of March 2020. I had, what turned out to be covid a few days before March 2020 lockdown and ate around what I had plus my parents gave me some eggs which they bought from a cafe as they had no idea how long they were going to be closed for. Bought a tray of about 30 eggs and had an empty 12 box which I left outside for them to fill.

We have customers who come in daily just buying whatever they are having for their EM plus things you buy weekly/monthly/whenever such as milk, tea, jam. Guessing they have very little in their homes. Not good if you have something and unable to go to the shops.

BobnLen · 22/05/2024 22:20

I'm surprised it's only three days
