Climbing Sca Fell Pike

I've done quite a bit of fell walking in the Lakes, but always with late DH who was good with a map and compass and I was lazy left him to it.

I'm due to go with a group of friends to attempt the climb. They're all physically fit, I don't think that will be an issue, but they're not hill walkers and I fear we will be one of those poorly equipped lost groups Mountain Rescue complain about.

I'm not useless, I do know how to use a map and compass in theory, but I haven't actually done it much.

I have climbed the mountain before, twice, but once we turned back because of difficult navigation in poor weather, but that may have been over cautious?

Just how reckless is it for a group of novices to attempt it? I will do everything in my power to make sure we pick a good day for it.

What route are you planning? If you are going from Wasdale on a fine day (or as fine as we get, assume it will rain at some point) its a pretty straightforward walk and I really don't think you will bother Mountain Rescue. The path is well maintained, there's some loose stone near the top but otherwise even if someone did twist their ankle you could walk off. Plenty of parking at Wasdale Head which is also a great place to have a drink afterwards.

If you are doing a lon circular walk from Great Langdale taking in some other summits probably best to have someone experienced in your group. The first time I did Scafell I did that and camped just below the summit in midwinter. For years I was under the impression it was the hardest of the three peaks, then I walked it from Wasdale one summer and was like 'Oh!'

Hope you have a lovely day.
