Posh instant coffee?

Pinkstuffs · 21/05/2024 21:02

Does this exist? DH loves coffee and already has all manner of machines, percolators etc but we have a newborn and he doesn’t have time to use them right now. He’s been drinking instant coffee but thought about getting an upgrade to some posh instant coffee for Father’s Day. Does such a thing exist and any recommendations please?

Paddy and Scott do coffee bags - basically tea bags with ground coffee in.

My partner had a box and liked them.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2024 21:19

Instant - even the supposedly better ones - are really nothing like ground.

Taylor's do ok coffee bags. But an Aeropress takes very little time to make a mugful.

I think Millicano is the next best thing :)

I'd have instant coffee any day. Coffee bean coffee is either too weak ot too strong, I much prefer Kenco Rich.

BocaChica · 21/05/2024 21:26

+1 for the Aeropress.....then he can choose whatever coffee he would like at the tme

toastofthetown · 21/05/2024 21:27

Not exactly what you're asking for, but would a really hands off brewer like the Clever Dripper help? It's a case of add water, add coffee, stir, wait two minutes, stir again then drain over a cup. Or on another line of though, maybe he could make a cold brew concentrate and dilute that with hot water instead of instant.

For instants though, some specialty coffee roasters sell instant coffee, though I haven't tried any myself. Maybe you could look into where he buys beans from, and see ig they also have an instant? And for something more commercially available, James Hoffmann reviewed supermarket instant coffee and found Little's Columbian the best.

SpttyMaldoon · 21/05/2024 21:27

I would check the Fortnum and Mason website and see what gets good reviews.

I once got my mum some chamomile and peppermint tea and she loved both, I remember the bags were beautifully soft, like made of silk.

but I admit that I don’t know if you’d be paying a stupid premium just because it’s F&M.

Babymamamama · 21/05/2024 21:27

I think the Taylor’s coffee bags are ok when I can’t be bothered to wash out the coffee press.

Pinkstuffs · 21/05/2024 21:31

We’ve got an aeropress, a drip filter… you name it I promise you we have it. We also don’t have a kitchen atm which again makes instant more appealing as it’s also a pita to clean up mess…

Get him a coffee gadget..

A JoGo Straw..

Or, if you really want to confuse and delight...
A Bripe.

I've not found an instant coffee that really scratches the itch like gadgets and a grinder with decent beans.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/05/2024 21:35

I have percol espresso powder at work because there is no coffee machine and we have to take our own coffee/tea in. It's pretty decent for instant. I still like a proper cup but needs must , it's a million times better than L'or or millicano or the awful Costa instant

PinkArt · 21/05/2024 21:36

Azera or Millicano are the closest I've found to real coffee but instant. Depending on how strong he likes his coffee usually, coffee bags can be really weak. Plus if you're waiting for the bag to work, you might as well make a proper coffee.

Agree with this.

I’ve tried all types of coffee - bean to cup, capsules etc but the only coffee I love is Kenco Millicano.

no other instant is as good!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 21/05/2024 21:48

A Nespresso or similar brand pod machine pours a cup of coffee quicker than you can boil the kettle.

mrsbyers · 21/05/2024 21:54

I got some ‘true start’ in Degusta advent calendar and really like it for days in a hurry

longdistanceclaraclara · 21/05/2024 22:11

How long does he spend making coffee? Instant coffee is not the same, coffee bags are dreadful. Fill a cafetière takes 5 mins, leave to sit and microwave as needed if needs must.

mitogoshi · 21/05/2024 22:13

Ground coffee and cafetière, takes no longer than instant and tastes so much better

AgMaggy · 21/05/2024 22:14

What about the Bodum insulated mugs with the built in coffee press? No extra dishes but can still use proper coffee in it. And it will keep it warm when he’s distracted with baby!

LeilaLettuce · 21/05/2024 22:16

M and S Americano. It’s the best I’ve tried.

browrobin · 21/05/2024 22:17

I think aeropress is a bit of a faff TBH and probably about as much hassle as a regular coffee.

Legendairy · 21/05/2024 22:21

Coffee bags definitely. There are a few varieties available in the supermarkets.

I have a lovely coffee machine, it's a Phillips bean to cup and it's a one button one to get load of varieties of coffees si takes no time ir effort at all. It was in the sale recently, well worth it IMO.

Curlysusie · 21/05/2024 22:23

Taylors of Harrogate coffee bags x

BonifaceBonanza · 21/05/2024 22:27

There’s no substitute. But equally I’m not sure why having a newborn means there isn’t time to make a coffee?

But I do have a solution. Brew up a dozen servings of espresso coffee in one go and store the liquor in a flask or bottle. Get a hotel Chocolat velvetiser or the cheap one from Aldi/Lidl.
When you want coffee it takes 60 seconds to foam the milk with a shot or two of the espresso.

TeenLifeMum · 21/05/2024 22:30

My filter jug coffee maker has a timer so I set it the night before and it’s ready in the morning.

At work we have a bean to cup machine in one office but the other office has nothing so I take Taylor’s coffee bags and they’re a good alternative.
