Posh instant coffee?

Does this exist? DH loves coffee and already has all manner of machines, percolators etc but we have a newborn and he doesn’t have time to use them right now. He’s been drinking instant coffee but thought about getting an upgrade to some posh instant coffee for Father’s Day. Does such a thing exist and any recommendations please?

Maybe not as 'posh' as you're looking for, but we've found Nescafe Azera Americano to be a pretty good instant coffee - and they do some very nicely designed tins. (maybe team it with some gorgeous biscuits / cookies / cake )

Taylors of Harrogate coffee bags x

I second these. Also the bags are fully compostable and can go in your food caddy or compost heap.

I watched a long YouTube by a proper coffee expert (the equivalentof a wine sommelier) - he blind tasted loads of instant coffee and the one which came out best was Percol Colombian. (They also do an espresso and americano which also did well.) I have the Colombian in my cupboard as it's been my emergency instant for a number of years and it's the best instant I've found.

As a coffee lover I'd be pretty disappointed with a tin of Nescafe as a mother's day gift TBH.

Would prefer a voucher for a cafe, or better still the promise of 2 minutes a day to myself to make my own.

JaneAustensCat · 21/05/2024 23:30

I've recently bought coffee bags and can't really tell the difference to a cafetiere coffee. I got Moreish "Strong Shit" off Amazon, not the cheapest but I think its much nicer than the Taylors one I tried. Moresih have several different types/strengths.

Carock · 21/05/2024 23:33

Not coffee but I got my DH an Ember mug. Which seemed absolutely ridiculous to me but , turns out the best present I could have bought him. So if your DH is fed up of cold coffee….😂

BonifaceBonanza · 22/05/2024 06:25

I can’t understand why someone can’t make a coffee with a newborn, especially when part of a couple. Surely this is faux ‘Im so busy’?

Sussurations · 22/05/2024 06:35

Percol is the best instant coffee, but Lidl instant Americano one in a tin is passable.

GruffalosGirl · 22/05/2024 06:35

I drink mainly filter coffee and I have found percol Colombian is the only decent instant coffee for me. Their decaf is good too. I find the coffee bags taste too powdery.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 22/05/2024 06:36

Possibly showing my lower class credentials* here… I like some of the Aldi “posh” instant coffees.

*I also like those sachets of instant cappuccino, so what do I know.

Another vote for milicano

Or maybe he's a very hands-on dad who is also back at work and doesn't want to be faffing around for ages making a hot drink multiple times a day?

I can't stand all this faux incomprehension crap. Having a newborn is notoriously hard work, especially when it's your first child. I bought a nespresso machine during my second pregnancy because I knew I would need lots of coffee and I'd be making it with one hand!

Azera is my favourite instant coffee and is usually half price somewhere if you shop around.

DustyLee123 · 22/05/2024 06:44

My little pod machine makes a coffee quicker than boiling a kettle.

HumanbyDesign · 22/05/2024 06:52

Another vote for Nespresso! No mess, really quick, great taste 👌
Almost every supermarket does own brand which can keep costs down, and You can get recyclable or compostable as well. Great product!

IsThisOneAvailable · 22/05/2024 06:53

If it has to be instant, I'm afraid Kenco is as good as I've found personally (usually milicano). But as someone else with a young baby, a Nespresso machine and pods are waay better and just as quick as instant.

Obviously your kitchen situation may be a barrier though.

BananaLambo · 22/05/2024 06:58

I have an emergency jar of Nescafé Gold Blend in the cupboard and when I’m in a hurry that does the job. It’s not trying to be ‘real’ coffee but it is very good at being instant coffee.

YearsofYears · 21/05/2024 21:22

I think Millicano is the next best thing :)

Agree!

renthead · 22/05/2024 07:07

I've had two newborns (one very challenging) and never had to resort to instant. No baby keeps you that busy.

I don't like French press coffee myself, but it's a million times better than instant and takes no time at all. You also don't need a kitchen to make it.

mitogoshi · 22/05/2024 07:20

@jobessieandme

Ive had two children and can't understand why he can't just make proper coffee either, it's not a faux incomprehension, it's genuine, it doesn't take two adults 24 hours a day to look after a baby, anyone with 2 kids is quite aware of how babies have to accommodate the rest of the household!

I do highly recommend ground beans and a good airtight container for storage, grinding as well takes more time.

Honestly, by the time I had dc2 I had an autistic toddler and exh went back to work on day 3 as they hadn't invented paternity leave where we lived. Still managed to make coffee.

Notonthestairs · 22/05/2024 07:47

Maybe as the Op & husband don't have a kitchen at the moment and have a young baby they just want the best possible instant coffee?

Azera is as close as we've got Op.
I might try Percol though.

Lavazza Prontissimo Intenso

It's expensive at about £5-£5.50 for 95g but I really only buy when on promotion - when I stock up - or if I can get it much cheaper using a loyalty card. 🌹

This comes across a little as virtue signalling TBH.

Not everyone finds having young kids easy (so glad it was so easy for you) and if instant coffee helps what's the problem?

browrobin · 22/05/2024 10:00

I had 15 kids, three dogs and renovated a house single handedly with newborn twins as a single parent. Why can't he make real coffee! (Winksarcastic)

browrobin · 22/05/2024 10:02

Oh and another reason instant coffee is less of a faff - it takes less cleaning up than a cafetiere / aeropress, disposing of grounds, cleaning of filters etc etc. And a jar lasts much longer than a pack of coffee or whatever.

ShinyBandana · 22/05/2024 10:09

I got around the time-to-make-nice-coffee-dilemma by making a large cafetière first thing and filling up a large thermos flask with it. That usually lasts me all day.
