Is there anywhere remotely lovely?

Looking to take a family member away for a few days as a treat. I'm clueless, don't really know that neck of the woods. Cottage, 2 bedrooms, pub and shop nearby a minimum.

Help!

3/4 of an hour/an hour's drive away, Cambridge, or Oxford. Bit further and lovely, Ely. More local and rural Waddesdon (nice country house but no shops), Woburn (Abbey/gardens and nice high street, has a Center Parcs), Turvey (pretty but no shops). Bigger, Bedford, St Neots. Very local, Stony Stratford, Olney. Some of these are fairly underwhelming, I'd look on tripadvisor.

Towcester. Never been only driven through.

If you can stretch to an hour there are loads of good options. I would suggest the Cotswolds. It’s about an hour to Stow on the Wold in normal traffic.

Otherwise the other way to the Chilterns again some nice views. Tring or Wendover.

or Rutland. There’s Rutland Water and some lovely looking buildings and definitely a shop and garage in Uppingham.

Woburn is lovely

What sort of things do you (or your family member) like to do?

Museums? Countryside Walks? Shopping? Mooching about somewhere scenic and pub lunch? Stately homes? Skiing on an indoor. Ski slope? Robot-delivered picnic? All these things are possible.

Do they live in Newport Pagnell or near it? Just trying to get a sense of that as if they do there is no point recommending things very nearby. Milton Keynes has a lot of interesting stuff (people might be surprised!) including historical things and parkland but if it is literally on their doorstep they won’t want to go to things there!

Cambridge is just over an hour. Oxford similar in other direction.
St Albans an hour south has interesting stuff, Cathedral etc.
Chilterns an hour and a bit south.

There are plenty of lovely villages round and about North Bucks / South Northants, but they are just not thought of as tourist destinations.

The gardens at Stowe near Buckingham are nice (National Trust).

If you would consider a very lux looking B&B, I have always been curious about Montpellier House in Sherington which is a pretty village between Olney and NP. Just checked and it seems to get sensational reviews on Booking . Com and tripadvisor. Only showing availability up to end of June.

Agree with Woburn also being a good base. There is the house, the safari park and Woburn itself has plenty of restaurants.
