I'm shattered! Coughing, especially at night, for about a month now. Send me your magic remedies! I've SO had enough! I need sleep!

I went to the GP this week when it hit a month and I've got antibiotics which seem to be helping. Also Robitussin/dextromethorphan mainly at night.

Sound like Marge Simpson though!

Sympathies, it's bloody horrible

Onedayatatime22 · 21/05/2024 20:03

Flowers thank you. Glad you've found something that helps.

I have just finished a course of antibiotics and I still have this bloody cough. I'm so tired and I'm sore from coughing. Doctor won't consider more antibiotics so it is just getting worse. I could cry so sympathies from me.

I’ve had a cough for 2.5 weeks….been given a form to take to outpatients for a drop in chest X-ray if the cough is still around next week …as per nice guidance…my gp has today prescribed nasal spray steroids and codeine ….both to suppress the cough

Onedayatatime22 · 21/05/2024 21:21

I'm so sorry there are so many people suffering. I'm going to try benylin night this evening. Even if I don't stop coughing I hope it will knock me out to sleep through rather than retching my guts up every night 🤧🤢

I hate to tell you but I had a cough like this for 4 months and I’m only just now recovered.

Dr thought was linked to a viral infection I had. I tried a nasal spray. Didn’t really do much.

The only thing that helped at night a bit was soothers and little sips of water to try suppress it. It really was horrid. I was often sick with coughing and exhausted with lack of sleep.

Time has helped but it was a long haul. Hope you feel better soon.

Chillilounger · 21/05/2024 21:45

My DH had his for 3 months then one day it suddenly stopped. It was awful.

familyissues12345 · 21/05/2024 22:09

We've all had a cough, since having a really nasty (not Covid) virus back in February. DHs is triggered by eating/drinking, mine is randomly triggered by laughing - really bloody annoying!

DrJonesIpresume · 21/05/2024 22:12

There's a bug going round that people are calling the 100 day cough.

ChristmasLightsLover · 21/05/2024 23:14

I'm coming to the end of antibiotics and steroids for a chest infection. Exhausted by the bloody coughing preventing me from sleeping.

Interested in codeine as a cough suppressant? Never heard of that. Does it just make you sleepy so you nod off? Sorry, can't remember username of the person who mentioned that. I have codeine to hand...

Onedayatatime22 · 22/05/2024 05:58

Reporting back on benilyn night. I took it at about 9pm and it worked till about 5am when the tickly cough and gag returned. Definite improvement sleep wise but I feel a bit hung over this morning.

Thank you @Onedayatatime22 - I'll get some and test it out!

I had this earlier in the year, weeks and weeks of coughing, my ribs ached so much. I saw an article that mentioned that the cough may have morphed from the original chest cough into a nasal drip cough .... and suggested taking Sudafed or a similar over the counter medicine. Three days later the cough disappeared. It might be coincidence tho.

That's interesting! I might give that a go - which Sudafed did you get?

We all started with this the week before Easter. We're all still coughing, it's awful. It's gone through every type of cough you can get, at the moment it's making us want to retch. Can't wait for it to stop!

The worst is in work, sharing an office and trying to suppress the urge to cough every 10 minutes is torture and then the feeling of needing to clear your throat when you're in conversation.

You have my sympathy!

activelysleeping · 22/05/2024 08:51

Ah I'm on day 4 of this and it's awful! Started with a bit of a cold and ever since it's been cough, cough, cough, cough. Throat and chest ache and nothing seems to really help although soluble codeine gives me a few hours relief at night.

I really do hope it doesn't last for 100 days!!!

Yes - that's how I started m. Nothing to write home about until the cough started.

And as previous poster said (sorry can't see the thread when typing on my phone), it has morphed through many different types of cough! I'm mostly ok during the day but it'll suddenly catch me out and my voice cracks... constantly clearing my throat. The night cough is like a fierce tickle that makes me gag. I am sometimes able to cough it out but am grabbing the water & bronchostop pastilles at every turn.

2nd night on the benilyn last night. Got me through to 5am again.

I read a piece the other day where someone (journalist, can’t remember who) said she had discovered her 100 day cough was actually whooping cough.

ChristmasLightsLover · 22/05/2024 18:03

@Onedayatatime22 Are you managing to get some rest during the day?

I'm starting a second round of steroids and antibiotics. Went to two places to secure Benilyn for tonight.

Am hopeful for tonight - for us both!! Grin

PeppermintPorpoise · 22/05/2024 18:10

You need to go to the GP with a cough thats been around that long, just in case.

I had this a few years ago (cough at night for a couple of months) and it was acid reflux. The acid can kind of aspirate up when you're lying down and create a tickly, naggling cough. I didnt have any big symptoms otherwise either. Some minor diet and eating changes etc cleared it right up. Try taking a rennie before bed and see what happens.

Working full time so no unfortunately.

How did you get on with the benylin?

@activelysleeping How you doing? Really hope it's not 100 days, for any of us.

@Onedayatatime22 I have never had a sick note. I've worked for decades. I work FT and have a great employer. I'm taking the sick notes and sitting still. I know that's not an option for everyone though.

The Benilyn was good. Slept from 11pm till 4am. And again around 5.30am for another 2 hours. The world looks so different when you've had some sleep.

Tel12 · 23/05/2024 08:32

GP. Antibiotics and steroids. You really need some help, it's worked for others.

Yes I've read this too. Apparently whooping cough incidents are rising. I'm just about coming out of being sick with it after several weeks and other wider family members have been going through it. A bit scary when you're trying to take in a breath between coughing bouts.

I managed by sipping lots of thin liquid (hot/warm), avoiding all dairy, taking paracetamol regularly, staying warm (I even put the heating back on for 30-45mins at a time and taking Superdrug mucus cough linctus with gualfenesin. Hot steamy baths helped too plus warm salt water gargles when I ran out of linctus - helped still the cough reflex so I could sleep. I hope you all recover soon. 🌹

Whooping cough cases have been rising across England, as well as in many other countries, since December 2023 due to a combination of factors. Whooping cough is a cyclical disease that peaks every 3-5 years. The last cyclical increase occurred in 2016.9 May 2024

I think I'm slowly improving! Cough and random tickle/ voice going during the day much much better. Still coughing in the evening. Will keep on with the benilyn for a couple more days then attempt a drug free night!
