Support for snacking on crisps and chocolate

I don’t want to put this in weight loss chat because then I feel worse (everyone has such nice, good diets there!).

But can I start a support thread for those of us (like me) who can hoover up an entire sharing pack of crisps (the big ones) to themselves. Plus chocolates and so on.

I don’t mind the odd treat like Rich Tea light biscuits or chocolate wafer biscuits.

But I need to post here when I get tempted usually of an evening and even not to buy them!

Please, no saintly 😇 people who say “oh I never ever snack!”

I season my food with a good quality sea salt which makes is delicious and kills savoury cravings as your body gets what it needs from the sea salt (trace minerals). I used to love crisps but now maybe eat one small, single serve bag a month.

@FinallyHere a lot of your post resonates with me. I can’t eat any confectionery at all as it’s like a drug and lights up all the sensors in my brain. I used to buy and hide sweets when I knew my DH would be out of the night. Then feel ashmed afterwards, make promises to myself that I won’t do it again until the next time he was away. Just like an alcoholic. I’ve been “sober” 3.5 years now, I don’t think I can ever touch the sweets again.

Ooh I wonder if your salt tip will work. I tend to use low salt now if ever.

I sort of think it would work but then I remember when I was a kid and though we didn’t snack loads we still sort of did.

Low cal hot chocolate with a handful of the mini marshmallows. This really helps keep my cravings and I don't want another on straight away

How's everyone getting on ?

Well I’ve just eaten a bun with icing on in a cafe

Last night I got my hair appointment mixed up so though I walked there and back I got a Reese’s nuts bar and pack of chocolate eclair sweets.

When I got home I had an apple and cheese plus an orange so wasn’t as bad as I thought.

So far this morning nothing though.

That’s not the worst thing in the world. I’d call that a treat but ideally if you can offset it with steps or exercise that’s good.

Thank you! I did walk to the cafe on my way to the supermarket and it IS breakfast (not healthy, I know) 😊

Lol - it tells a story that even my username reflects my love of snacks

I also crave crisps and chocolate in the evenings but I'm losing weight and trying my best to resist.

When I really really want to eat either I have two go-to's that often stop me:

  • Thickly sliced cucumber with a healthy crack of sea salt. Crunch and salt.
  • Tip tops. They help me massively with a sweet craving and I'd rather sit and eat five tip tops at 10cals each or whatever than a family size bar of chocolate!
Roguebludger · 23/05/2024 11:28

I did fine last night but cracked at 4 and ate 2 of the kids' pain au chocolat. Today is another day and I've made some lollies out of orange squash and I'm hoping to use them when I get cravings at 4pm today.

@Proudbitch
Yes, Nutrional yeast could be the answer! Sprinkle it on something healthy. It tastes a bit like the cheese powder on wotsits !

Yeah thats what I thought!

i’m on day 3 of no crisps..

also i am tracking everything on myfitnesspal, and I have to say im eating nutritious stuff, but ive clocked 2000 calories for the day with my food and snacks. That’s without anything like chocolate or any ‘treat’ food.

im actually quite horrified, I must have been eating a minimum of 3,000 calories up until last week!! Probably closer to 4000!! That explains the 2 stone weight gain then…

unfortunately though, I’m still absolutely STARVING and so this doesn’t feel sustainable to me!

although I have done quite a carb heavy day as I am trying to ease myself into the lack of crisps…

apologies for the long update! Also apologies for my name, I’m not a bitch, I was drunk when I first signed up to mumsnet 🙈🤣 I was thinking of changing my name to ‘monster munch’ but realised I’ll make myself too hungry..

I log my calories into nutracheck sometimes and I agree - it's horrendous to see how quickly the calories ramp up even on supposedly "good" days!

How has everybody got on this Friday???

sheoaouhra · 24/05/2024 23:05

Read "why we eat too much" by Andrew Jenkinson

EasilyDefined · 25/05/2024 13:43

I’ve read it, it’s very interesting but it hasn’t stopped me

kolopolo · 25/05/2024 13:45

I just remembered I keep these in freezer for when DNephew visits!

And if I’m out walking I try to buy lower calorie ice cream or lollies if it’s hot.

As long as that’s in moderation it’s not too bad.

I read somewhere it’s white bread which is really bad for you not so much brown/wholegrain.

I'm trying to replace biscuits with chocolate covered rice cakes. It's not quite the same but at least they're lower in calories!

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 15:53

hello!

i had to go get a boost part way through this thread.

im an addict with no self control atm. But I’m putting on menopausal weight and I’m getting new stretch marks which is disappointing! So I must do something. Plus BP is high as well as cholesterol.

I try not to ban anything otherwise my focus just goes there. Instead I don’t buy crisps apart from a few occasions a year. Or I buy those poppadom minis that Tesco sell in a big bag. I haven’t checked the calories though.

i Love prawn cocktail crisps but I found that last time I had them the roof of my mouth became really sore and I couldn’t eat any food for days!

But I buy chocolate for pack lunches. Then they disappear.
last few days I’ve eaten a whole pack of biscuits in a day. Next day a large bag of revels.

@Rummikub welcome to the club x
Even that makes me think of club biscuits 😂 I'm hoping we can come up with ways to beat our addiction. I've always thought I could cope having crisps and chocs in the house so always have but last two weeks I've realised that I really don't have the willpower so like you have stopped buying most. But are buying for the kids which is difficult. I'm trying to simply stop the snacking between meals but not depriving myself of a bit of choc for pudding, straight after dinner. Not sure where everyone is from but Apparently the French, Italians , Spanish who generally have better diets still do still have crisps but they eat them just prior to the main meal , a benefit of not snacking is not having the insulin spikes when u snack which leave you hungry for more. trying to find satiating meals to keep you full between meals is the key, lots of protein and fibre . That said , even when I'm full I still crave the sweetness of chocolate.

Interesting about the French, Italian, Spanish ways of snacking and eating crisps.

Was out last night so yes snacking on crisps and chocolate for slight hangover. I do know if I have you know the late night corner shop snacks, that’s not great, so try not to do that much.
