Support for snacking on crisps and chocolate

I don’t want to put this in weight loss chat because then I feel worse (everyone has such nice, good diets there!).

But can I start a support thread for those of us (like me) who can hoover up an entire sharing pack of crisps (the big ones) to themselves. Plus chocolates and so on.

I don’t mind the odd treat like Rich Tea light biscuits or chocolate wafer biscuits.

But I need to post here when I get tempted usually of an evening and even not to buy them!

Please, no saintly 😇 people who say “oh I never ever snack!”

I don’t buy family sized bags of crisps anymore as I end up eating the lot. I’ve started a hobby that keeps my hands full (so I can’t eat while I’m doing it) but I’ve just been too tired recently.

Timeforachocolate · 20/05/2024 22:03

I have just demolished a big bag of salted green plantain chips. Bought instead of Giant wotsits ( prawn cocktail flavour) in hope of being healthier.

need to just have zero in the house, sigh.

I have eaten a ridiculous amount this evening and have been craving sweet things all day. I am on my period and also have drastically reduced the amount I drink (work in progress) over the past 2 weeks so they could both be a contributing factor. Saying that though, I have always snacked and am currently the heaviest I've ever been whilst not pregnant or just given birth.

I think for me is to stop buying family share crisps and pop chips but have them say once a week if I do have them. As a treat. That did help me on Weight watchers when I went.

Just made myself some raspberry jelly pots. Would taste far better as vodka jelly shots! 😆

I do think either having them never or as a treat is the way to go.

If someone made a drug to stop snacking they’d make a killing!

Best advice I can give is don't buy them. Then you can't eat them. I used to do snacks in the 10 pack of Twirls. I no longer buy them and after the first week I didn't really miss them. You just have to get through the difficult first week to 10 days to get the sugar cravings out of your body.

How does that work for crisps though?

It is way too easy to buy them. Pop chips and Eaten Path “crisps” are more expensive than the normal crisps.

I can and could easily not buy chocolate but I suppose it’s the if you see one and you’re bored or something fix.

My ex Weight watchers coach her downfall was mini eggs (Cadburys). And Rich tea light biscuits.

I used to be like this but I’m a healthy weight now with a healthy attitude to food. What worked for me was allowing the food but in a normal portion size and then forcing myself to stop. If you manage it enough times it’s like forming a new habit. So have a bag of crisps one day and a bit of chocolate, have a Kit Kat and a handful of nuts the next day. Have a treat food every single day but force yourself to stop there. Don’t ban the foods. Don’t buy sharing bags. Not sure if that helps but it helped me

TheChosenTwo · 20/05/2024 22:27

Oh god I also bought those seaweed thins, they are fucking revolting fishy chewy strips of nastiness. Got a bloody box of the bastards in the cupboard now, they mock me when I’m opening it 😂

I do agree though, it’s best for me to not have any at all, once I’ve flipped the switch of eating a bag of crisps it will realistically be more like 3 packets. So now I go crispless (along with most carbs tbh) and what I can report is that my belly issues have really settled down. I think I have some sensitivity to something which caused me to, well, I’ll not go into it, but it’s calmed down massively.

Actually you might be onto something there… I never used to buy sharing bags cos they’re for sharing right?

In fact on Sunday I almost did it! Got given a Kit Kat as a freebie as the person in the cafe booth didn’t have change for my coffee! But I did have a free Greggs donut as it was there on my app. 🫣

I don’t cut out carbs but try to reduce them.

I suppose I do have rice cakes and ryvitas as sort of good carby snacks.

I just don't buy crisps, biscuits or chocolate because I can't be trusted with them and I'm trying to lose weight. It means DH and teen can't have them at home either. If DH desperately wants them he can buy some out of the house. Teen doesn't eat crisps or junk food as heavily into performance sport.

Tooski · 21/05/2024 07:14

I decided I was an addict and so can’t be trusted (it’s true, and I can’t). I’m too lazy to bake all the time and no crisps in the house unless we have visitors. I do buy salted popcorn but I’m not that keen so the kids take it for lunches.

Honestly, willpower is over rated, it’s easier to go cold turkey and kick the habit.

Same here. The only crisps I buy are the toddler veggie stick things as I don’t want those but my 4 year old has them occasionally. My husband said the other day that he missed crisps 😆 but they aren’t really any value nutritionally and if he wants them he can buy them! Stops me snacking on them.

AprilShowerslastforHours · 21/05/2024 07:31

What has helped me is brushing my teeth with my toddler early in the evening. I can’t eat junk in front of her else she’ll want some (and I don’t want to encourage a sweet tooth especially as we have diabetes in the family) and it’s too much hassle to brush my teeth again. Saying that I remembered I had some decent fudge stashed away last night…

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/05/2024 09:32

This thread is mostly to try to stop snacking so any tips are great. I don’t want people to develop unhealthy habits though.

When I think back to when I was a child and had crisps, sweets, chocolate this was mostly bought as a treat. We did have biscuits in the biscuit tin. Had Crisps in pub with parents.

We baked Queen Cakes with DM.

A nice fairly healthy snack is peanut butter in dates. Yummy.

No chocolate today yet! Or crisps. Had some hummus and carrot sticks and some nuts for afternoon slump. Probably as many calories but at least there’s some nutritional value

flutterby1 · 21/05/2024 18:11

I've found my people !!!!!

Chypre · 21/05/2024 18:13

I only get critical craving once e month... What works for me is buying the strongest and spiciest crisps (Max Strong Jalapeño Cheese flavour) and measure out exactly 20 grams, the recommended serving size. First few pieces are DIVINE but it is so strong, and spiciness builds up gradually until I am breathing fire. I can never finish that tiny bowl, but craving is satisfied until the next month lol.

flutterby1 · 21/05/2024 18:40

Greg Wallace- his premise is to cut out snacks and just eat 3 meals a day. I think it's a winner.

It gives the body time to digest and stops insulin spikes from snacking, which causes hunger . I'm trying to only eat a few snacks on Saturday night.

I am an all -life heavy , daily crisp and chocolate user !

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 21/05/2024 20:15

I was, fairly good. I had 2 dates stuffed with peanut butter, 2 rich tea light biscuits and a natures valley choc bar in morning and natures valley other bar in afternoon.

Oh and finished off chocolate wafers…

But not bought anything more!

However, I’m off to hairedressers tomorrow afternoon could be a test!

No snacking done tonight. Just a banana. Like the way this thread makes me feel accountable!

Feckedupbundle · 21/05/2024 22:44

I love crisps and chocolate and usually eat a packet and bar a day. However I recently noticed the pounds creeping on,so have cut them right out. If I can make it until tomorrow,I won't have eaten a packet of crisps or a bar of chocolate in 3 weeks.
I'm 55 and have never had to watch what I eat before, and it's bloody hard work, especially as I do a physical job and consequently get very hungry. I have never found a form of exercise that I like, which is not a bad thing, because exercise makes me even hungrier than normal. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

flutterby1 · 22/05/2024 07:41

All this talk about chocolate and crisps made me have both last night... I am sooooo weak! 😂
Right, another day. I'll report when the cravings happen and what I'm doing instead. I still want them to become a treat and not an everyday must-have ...

flutterby1 · 22/05/2024 07:48

Do you find it helps if you don't buy them and have them in the house ? I've never done this as I can imagine myself having to get in the car to go and buy some out of desperation but maybe I SHOULD stop buying them.

Also, I'm hoping it saves money , I bet I spend about £2.50 a day on crisps and chocolate. That's £912 per year !!!! A little holiday
