Tell me about your big cheap car

So the time has come to replace our very old and very nearly dead Peugeot 207 Estate.

I need something big enough for two tall teenagers to sit in the back comfortably on long journeys. And a boot big enough for A LOT of stuff.

It also needs to be £15,000 tops for a hopefully not ancient second hand one.

Hit me with your suggestions please.

I’ve recently bought a Mitsubishi Outlander. Good size, and you can get a fairly decent one for £15000

I spent just under £10k on a Toyota Alphard. Really reliable and spacious. Seven seats you can turn the back ones into a bed. Or fold up the back two and have a massive boot. Or fold them all up and it’s a van.

We have a BMW sports tourer estate. It's a 2013 and we've had it since 2016.
It's got a huge boot and is so reliable. Never goes wrong.
Run flat tyres are a real comfort.
It's diesel though so maybe that will put you off.

We were recommended the seat Alhambra when we were looking
Sadly budget not as healthy as yours and we got a zafira
I had a crysler voyager before - good sliding doors , big seats, boot not massive but loads of aisle space inside

craigth162 · 20/05/2024 06:29

Dacia duster. Not fancy but big and neverhad an issue with it. 4 year old one was about £12k

We've had both of these in the saloon version. Both have big boots; in fact the Superb's boot is so big that I can't reach the back of it and have to drag things forward with an umbrella (l'm not short). Back seat takes tall passengers easily.

Have a look at the kia sportage. You'll get a decent 3 year old one for that price. Huge boot and lovely to drive.

Dougt · 20/05/2024 07:08

Passat or Superb estate. We ended up with a Passat as there are more around!

Cat2024 · 20/05/2024 07:09

Honda CRV. Very pleased with it. Big boot and quite a lot of space in the back.

Kia ceed estate

I love my Citroen Berlingo. It's easy to remove seats from the back, so you can reconfigure it. I often remove the centre seat so that I can put bikes in without removing the wheels.

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/05/2024 10:45

we've just bought a 2 year old Peugeot 3008 and had the same criteria as you.

We paid £22,000 so a bit more than your budget but you could probably get a slightly older one for £15,000.

So far its doing a great job!

transformandriseup · 20/05/2024 10:47

We have an Mazda CX-5 which is the style of a SUV and roomy inside with a decent sized boot but it considered a large hatchback for tax purposes which makes it cheaper to run.

SallyWD · 20/05/2024 11:06

We've had a Skoda Superb since 2013. It's brilliant, still going strong. It has a massive boot and space in the back for 3 teenagers I'd say! We've had barely problems with it. It always passes its MOT. My friends with more expensive cars always seem to be having problems and going to the garage.

HotCrossCat · 20/05/2024 11:09

Ford Galaxy. Got a 6 year old one for 15k last year. My third galaxy, I love them. Massive and can get everything you want in them.

TallulahBetty · 20/05/2024 11:09

Another vote for a Skoda Octavia estate.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/05/2024 11:38

@FunnysInLaJardin we had a Peugeot 3008 ; it was a terrific load carrier . Like the OP we had tall people to accommodate as first priority and it worked for that. Fantastic boot space and although bits of plastic fell off it was very low cost in terms of maintenance. Very unglamorous but it really did the job we bought it for.

Lanawashington · 20/05/2024 12:09

We got a Ford Kuga last year and absolutely love it. The titanium x sport model, 6 years old £14k. Pretty cheap to run and really spacious

Pinkywoo · 20/05/2024 14:56

Mondeo estate. Huge boot, space for an adult to sit between two big car seats so definitely enough for two teenagers, and really nice to drive.

longdistanceclaraclara · 20/05/2024 16:48

Vauxhall zafira. Biggest boot we found. Decent back row space. Fugly.

pecanpie101 · 20/05/2024 19:42
