The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - on one of the terrestrial channels tomorrow, I believe

Thank you so much for this. I love this film and haven't seen it in ages and now I can watch it again. It's on BBC2 tomorrow at midday.

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

Good Morning Vietnam

I highly recommend Glory which is about the American Civil War and specifically the Black regiments being allowed to fight.

Hackshaw Ridge is one of my favourite films.

Is that the one about the American conscientious objector who was a medic and saved loads of men through his bravery? If so I thought that was a fantastic film.

Teenagers can definitely watch The Pianist.

I watched a film called Dresden about 15 years ago. About the carpet bombing of Dresden. Well, a love story in the midst of it anyway. I remember enjoying it and would like to watch it again but can't find it.

I think after exams, perhaps even in a year or so. I watched it when it came out and it destroyed me. I was well over 30 at the time........

I'm not usually a fan of war films but I really enjoyed the following ones:- The Eagle has landed.
Dunkirk (the 2017 one).
Battle of Britain.

Yes.

The 12th Man is based on a true story about the Norwegian resistance and the bravery, determination and perseverance of one particular man that survives despite all the odds. It’s one of my favourite films.

FadedRed · 18/05/2024 17:39

Memphis Belle
The Longest Day
The Battle of Britain
In Which We Serve
Hanover Square
Miniseries (there are two) set around WWI that is real story is Vera Brittain’s Testament of Youth

Myteenhatesme · 18/05/2024 17:40

Another vote for Ice Cold in Alex
Rome, Open City

FadedRed · 18/05/2024 17:43

And if you have some ‘drama’ channels on the TV, then Foyle’s War was a brilliant series which is often repeated, and MASH, set in the ‘forgotten’ war in Korea, it’s classed as a comedy, but with a very strong serious background.

ArchaeoSpy · 18/05/2024 17:45

independence day series, basically examples of future wars

LardoBurrows · 18/05/2024 17:46

The Heroes of Telemark - 1965 film telling the story of the great bravery of people in the Norwegian resistance during World War II.

ArchaeoSpy · 18/05/2024 17:47

Bridge of Spies

Abouttimeforanamechange · 18/05/2024 17:50

This Happy Breed, wonderful film with a fantastic cast of actors.

Yes, This Happy Breed is great.

For Testament of Youth, I don't think you can beat the BBC version with Cheryl Campbell.

I wouldn't say Escape to Victory is up there with the greats, and I could really do without Sly Stallone as Token Yank. But the football match is good fun. A shame that most young people watching it today wouldn't recognise most of the players.

cakeorwine · 18/05/2024 17:52

Lots of good mentions already - films from the 50s are interesting as it was only just after WW2 and the actors had fought in it.

The Enemy Below

Reach for the sky - about Douglas Bader

The Cruel Sea
Carve her name with pride - about Violette Szabo
The man who never was - about Operation Mincemeat
The Cockleshell Heroes

newtb · 18/05/2024 17:52

GentlemanJohnny · 18/05/2024 18:14

Zulu
The Four Feathers (original black & white version)
In Which We Serve
The Sea Shall Not Have Them
The Horse Soldiers.

OutOfTheHouse · 18/05/2024 18:20

Went the Day Well?

Glorious and heart breaking. It was filmed and put out during WWII. It’s set in a small village that is invaded by the Germans but they are undercover and disguised as allied soldiers that need a billet. The village people discover the truth. I could honestly cry just thinking about it. The fact that the war was still on when this went out, that it could have been someone’s reality.
