The Pianist. More about the holocaust than actual war. Utterly gruelling, maybe not for dd. But absolutely essential for adults.

Charlotte Grey
Meagan Leavy
Eye in the Sky

The Gentle Sex, made and narrated by Leslie Howard, about the work of women in WW2. You might find it on YouTube

also Millions Like Us, about women factory workers in the war.

And Mrs Miniver, about a middle class family in the war.

Also, set just before the outbreak of war, Night Train to Munich and Pimpernel Smith, both about helping people escape from Nazi Germany. In Pimpernel Smith, Leslie Howard plays an updated version of the Scarlet Pimpernel, which he had made a few years before. I think it's on YouTube.

(Pimpernel Smith is an archaeologist; I like to think that the archaeologists Smith and Jones shared an adventure at some point)

If you stretch your definition of 'war film' to 'Cold War film' there's The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, which is brilliant. Also The Manchurian Candidate (possibly re-made later? I'm thinking of the one with Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury and Laurence Harvey).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/05/2024 16:36

Oh, and if we're allowed war films from further back, Master and Commander!

SquashPenguin · 18/05/2024 16:42

Fury

NowyouhaveDunnett · 18/05/2024 16:45

Carve Her Name With Pride about the women who went into occupied France for the SOE

Abouttimeforanamechange · 18/05/2024 16:48

Not wartime, but very much about the impact of war - The Third Man is superb. One of the best British films ever.

I love the old war films!!

I also like The Bridge at Remagen and Downfall.

YorkNew · 18/05/2024 16:49

Hackshaw Ridge is one of my favourite films.

OilyTussle · 18/05/2024 16:49

Not a film but a mini series (8 episodes from memory) - A Small Light on Disney plus.

LardoBurrows · 18/05/2024 16:49

Odette - based on a true story about a French woman living in England who volunteers to work for British Intelligence in Nazi-occupied France.

This Happy Breed, wonderful film with a fantastic cast of actors.

I watched a really interesting film last night - not a war film as such but it was about Alan Turing who invented a machine to crack the Enigma code in the 2nd world war.
Oppenheimer is supposed to be excellent
Tobruck

The Imitation Game is the one about Alan Turing, really good film.

Agreed!

This Happy Breed is a marvellous film. I'd forgotten it was made during WW2.

Millions Like Us is not an exciting adventure story but it's very good for getting more of an idea of what life was like for civilians, especially women. Terribly sad in parts. Sad

NanTheWiser · 18/05/2024 17:04

All the above.

And not quite a war film, but a romantic thriller with espionage thrown in: “The Eye of the Needle”, with Donald Sutherland as a German spy. Made in 1981. Quite chilling!

TammyJones · 18/05/2024 17:06

Hacksaw Ridge- true story. Absolutely astounding.

YorkNew · 18/05/2024 17:11

I really enjoyed The Fury.

YorkNew · 18/05/2024 17:14

And The Lives of Others.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/05/2024 17:15

The Imitation Game is a superb film. It does cover Alan Turing's chemical castration and death, disputedly, by suicide though. You met want to be prepared to explain that with your DD,@RazzleDazzleEm .

Oppenheimer is also really good. There are two short episodes of unexpected nudity/sex. About 90 seconds in total. Robert Oppenheimer was definitely not gay!

Bridge of Spies is a good Cold War movie.

NanTheWiser · 18/05/2024 17:22

Another Ive just remembered, “The Way To The Stars” or “Johnny in the Clouds”, made in 1945 with a cracking cast.

BMW6 · 18/05/2024 17:23

I am Old. From being very young I remember a film where the soundtrack was Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas as an American soldier was taken though a snowy scene to be shot for cowardice. I'm crying a bit now remembering it. The devastating poignancy.

I found out many years later the film name The Victors. I don't think anyone could watch that scene and not weep.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/05/2024 17:26

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Escape to Victory

The Great Escape

Enemy at the Gates

Goodnight Mr Tom
