Day in Edinburgh

Hello. I've just booked flights from Dublin to Edinburgh for the day on a whim for myself & my 2 grown up kids. It's a Saturday in August.
We all adore Edinburgh but haven't been for over 10 years I'd say so I've booked to fly over at 6am & home around 10pm.
Anyway I'm wondering if you can give me advice on what we can do. We'll arrive & have breakfast & then lunch & dinner later in the day & will have to be back at the airport by 8pm so not really loads of time but any suggestions would be welcome.
My only ideas are the hop on hop off buses which we've done in London & loved, and maybe Edinburgh castle?
Thank

There are food trucks all over. George Sq, Potterrow, Pleasance, etc., all major festival venues and full of food trucks and bars. Hundreds of them.

Just be prepared. The Edinburgh festival is the largest arts festival in the world and it will be heaving. But it’s mostly in the Old Town and the Southside - there are plenty of venues in the New Town but it won’t be so busy.

Also check out the International Festival. The Fringe is a bit hit and miss - lots of amazing things but lots of crap. The International Festival is all good really, but more mainstream (famous ballet companies, orchestras, etc).

As above, George Square is usually the place to head for food trucks, or cafes and coffee shops don't take bookings, or there's a "local" Tesco / Sainsburys type store on just about street corner where you could get sandwiches and snacks.
Amarone is really nice and handy for jumping on tram or airlink bus back to the airport.

Thanks guys. I'm so excited. A day trip to one of my fave cities!

The food trucks can be £££, often you'll find somewhere cheap and cheerful just a 5 minute walk from eg George Square instead where you can get a seat and is better value (& shelters you from the weather)!

Enjoy your day, you're going to be knackered but entertained!

Hello again. Well tomorrow's the day!
Ds has decided not to come with us so it's just me & dd.
We're arriving in the airport just before 8am and have Edinburgh larder booked for 9:30. Can anyone tell me the closest tram stop to it please?
Thanks.

Princes Street/Waverley

MiddleAgedDread · 23/08/2024 14:42

The Airlink 100 bus will take you to Waverley Bridge which is closer and it's cheaper.

Alsonification · 23/08/2024 14:43

Thanks a million. Much appreciated.

It's £8 return to the airport on the Airlink 100 bus or £9.50 on the tram. Single fares on other buses around the city are £2 or price capped at £4.80 if you pay with a contactless card on each bus. Or you can get a network day ticket for £12 which covers both the bus and tram to/from the airport and all lothian buses around the city if you might use them too. Fares & Tickets - Lothian Buses
