Saw this app being discussed on telly and it's brilliant.

You just give it access to your phone's microphone and it identifies any birdsong it hears. We were out last night in the evening, the birds were being super noisy and we heard pheasants, willow warblers and goldcrests.

Ooh, thanks! That sounds great. I’ll definitely try that out.

This is a very good app, but you should be aware that not every bird it identifies is genuine - it does produce false positives.

When you can hear the bird singing and see the calls showing on the sonogram - it's pretty good. But sometimes it picks up on background noise - e.g. I had a light aircraft identified as Turtle Dove.

Very true. It's a fantastic app but not always accurate. I was trying to identify the swifts/swallows/House Martins outside the house. Merlin app thought they were Canada Geese!

Thanks i just downloaded it. Do you need to record to bird to find out what it is?

Misthios · 18/05/2024 09:41

I think it records by default but you can easily delete the recordings. Also agree that false positives might be an issue if you're in a noisier area.

I love that app; but it doesn't recognise the local blackbird who mimics a car alarm!

It makes a walk or sit in the garden far more interesting.

Lonelycrab · 18/05/2024 13:16

It’s very good. Only downside is the size of the app, it’s pretty big.

LaurieLeecountry · 18/05/2024 13:27

I love it and use it a lot

EasilyDefined · 18/05/2024 13:32

I love it too, we have tried other birdsong apps which have been a lot more complicated to use. It's only for interest for us so it doesn't matter if it's not 100% accurate

Yes it records the birdsong and identifies the birds based on that.
