Really dislike my child's name

It was chosen in a rush when she was born poorly. My husband loved it and kept calling her it, nothing serious, and I just ran with it when the NICU asked 'does she have a name yet we can write down?'

Anyway, she was registered as that. And she is not too far off school starting age so obviously it cannot be changed fairly

I don't like it because it isn't really an adult's name. It is pretty enough. And it's not awful.

But it is brassy, a lot of people would say!

I just wished I'd given her an adult name that is timeless and classic

My other DC had a classic, timeless name. Suitable for a lawyer Grin

It's Lola. Nothing more annoying than someone not saying what the name actually is! So there you go

The only Lola I know is a fabulous young woman. She's funny, kind, opinionated (in a good way), has loads of friends, doesn't follow the crowd.

I admire her for her character. The fact that I also love her name is irrelevant.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/05/2024 11:38

Lola is a lovely name.

No words of a lie, my H loved Fifi for a daughter too. I managed to talk him round to it being a bit too out there for an actual child Confused

Not sure how he managed to go from Marcus and Lawrence to the girls names he wanted. Think Lottie, Fifi, Crystal, Chelly (Chelsea), Bonnie

Argh

Based on his boy v girl names, I wonder if your husband is quite traditional when it comes to gender roles (which wouldn't impress me much.

That said, I like the name Lola. All the Lolas that I know are quite lovely, accomplished young women.

I know a Lola, teenager, great name, no issues at all with this name, and there's lots of successful Lolas in all walks of life, so I think your worries are unfounded. I prefer it to lots that are popular on here.

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 18/05/2024 11:49

Ah, Lola is lovely! I thought you were going to say it was something really tacky.

weareallcats · 18/05/2024 12:02

Lola was a nice surprise at the end of your post - not what I was expecting based on your description!

Slicedpeaches · 18/05/2024 12:07

I really like Lola, it's pretty but not frilly, easy to spell and pronounce and well known but not overused.
I knew a Lola when I was growing up, she was lovely and is a deputy head teacher now and still suits her name.

I didn't realise it was your name that determined your career choices.

This should be publicised, or perhaps that's it the elite don't want the hoi polloi to know.

Of course it doesn’t, it’s just my own opinion of the name.

Names can affect your perception of people to some degree though, so it’s not nothing.

Also note the OP DH other choices for girls names - Fifi for example……

Iamthemoom · 18/05/2024 12:30

I love the name. It's not not adult. The only adult Lola i know is a confident, smart young woman. It suits her perfectly.

Prawncow · 18/05/2024 12:34

Lottie, Fifi, Crystal, Chelly

WTF was your husband on? He didn’t even have the excuse of pregnancy hormones!

I think Lola is lovely and you should be so grateful that you’re not having to shout Fifi across a playground.

QuantumPanic · 18/05/2024 13:43

Lola is a lovely name and suits both kids and adults.

Growing up I knew a Lala, who is probably in her 30s by now. She may well be a lawyer.

luckylavender · 18/05/2024 13:50

One of my favourite people is called Lola. She works for me. She's hard working, smart & sassy.

Newtrix · 18/05/2024 18:36

FloofyBear · 18/05/2024 08:06

I like Lola too! Can you give her a nickname you like? Lolly, lollipop, pops, lops etc

Where I live Lops are headlice 😂

Picklelily99 · 29/08/2024 11:21

I see where you're coming from; Marcus and Lawrence sound Stolid, no fuss. Lola sounds like she'll run off and join the circus. I know which one I prefer! Let her take her name and OWN it! It's a strong, independent female name - I hope she flies!

Yazzi · 29/08/2024 11:23

Lola is a beautiful name. I am a lawyer and would never think a certain name is more lawyerly than another, nor would it impact my perception of opposing counsel!

Actually we have a local judge with the last name 'Raper' which in my deep dark private mind I simply cannot be mature about.

Heddwch123 · 29/08/2024 11:46

Honestly, I’m a complete name snob and can’t stand these out there made up names or the need for individuality and all that nonsense.
Lola is absolutely fine, it’s lovely, pretty and doesn’t sound brassy in the slightest.
She’ll be absolutely fine as an adult and it’ll grow with her. Stop worrying xx

Does she walk like a woman and talk like a man yet?

The kinks messed that name up for me 😁

the Kinks made me love that name. brilliant song.

One of our BF's DD's is called Lola, nothing wrong with it. I don't see it causing her problems when older. Unlike some names...cough, Nevaeh, cough, Euphoria, lol!

ElderLemon · 23/01/2025 22:58

Unless someone has a ridiculous made up name, it doesn't matter. Once you know someone, their name is just them and you never think about it. How many people names do you ever really think about? So don't dwell on it, it's just a name.

lilacmamacat · 28/01/2025 12:03

Lola is absolutely fine. There's miles worse out there.

Deathraystare · 29/01/2025 08:25

meandmylounge · 18/05/2024 06:46

Thank you

I thought it was quite a popular name is fairness but she's the only Lola I know... her nursery class is huge and there are more than 5! Evie/Ellie/Hallie -May. None is DS classes either (there are 2 classes for every year in that school)

She does suit it. She really does. I just can't imagine a professional, respectable woman called Lola Grin

In a way it might be to her advantage should she become a lawyer. People would certainly remember her. Think of that doctor on the tv called Pixie. I doubt people are thinking "Well I wouldn't let her see me "

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/01/2025 08:30

Lola is a lovely name. I know a woman, not a lawyer as such but similar in quite a high position, with a name that sounds made up. MN always warns against this but it hasn't held her back.

SmartHouse · 29/01/2025 08:37

Lola is fine. I thought you were going to say her name was Aurora, then I’d have agreed with you.
