Have you ever had good advice on MN?

A few months ago I was struggling with an overactive bladder, which was really bothering me. I went to the GP who prescribed some meds. They helped the symptoms but made me over sedated and I had to stop them. I was prescribed the same in patch form which had no impact at all.

while browsing Mn at the time someone had started a thread on the very same issue. Cheap otc antihistamines were suggested, so I tried and OMG what a life changer!!!! I can now live my life not worrying about where the nearest loo is.

I don’t remember who suggested it but wish to thank whoever it was.

have you acted on MN advice and it was effective?

More times than I can count. I love this nest of vipers.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/05/2024 14:33

Sometimes you have to sift for it but you do find it.

Howbizarre22 · 17/05/2024 14:44

MN helped me in my darkest hour- I felt heard & the advice helped me clear my cloud of confusion on how I was feeling- I could finally see the wood for the trees. There was of course the odd shitty comment but on the whole people were really supportive & it was a godsend. Hail you women! 🙏🏼😄

Lots - from financial advice through to how to deal with DC when they're being... well, DC. 🙄
A very useful resource!

frenchnoodle · 17/05/2024 15:05

Yes

TheFTrain · 17/05/2024 15:20

Not advice as such but empathy. When my DC went to uni I was completely bereft. I posted on here and had so much support. Lots of people had dropped their kid off at uni and were feeling the same. Not one crappy comment. Amazing really.

BovineUniversity · 17/05/2024 15:51

Yes. The one years ago about not needing to sterilise bottles. It was great. Made total sense.

ClawdeenWolf · 17/05/2024 16:18

I hardly ever post my own threads but over the years I've read loads of scenarios and they've shed light on my own experiences. It's helped me leave my shitty ex, lose weight and on occasion, parent my child. Sure it's rammed full of trolls and vipers but I love it.

MissingMoominMamma · 17/05/2024 16:21

Yes, I asked for help choosing a funeral song for my mum. I told mnetters what Mum was like, and they came up with suggestions.

Someone suggested Some Fantastic Place, by Squeeze. I listened to it with Dad and we both cried. It was perfect (and she was a Squeeze fan).

Whoever that was- thank you.

goingdownfighting · 17/05/2024 17:25

Countless times. It's my secret weapon in life. From sorting my skin out (shizzling), helping prepare me for my children starting school, so much. So thank you MNetters for dragging me through life.

Wonderwall23 · 17/05/2024 17:29

Grateful for a couple of smelly threads that recommended Dettol antibacterial soap.

Kendodd · 17/05/2024 17:32

Yes
Still haven't heard back from John Major though.

IvyGrippedtheSteps · 17/05/2024 17:35

Yes, when toddler DS became ill on holiday somewhere remote — it was nothing serious, but he was uncomfortable and unhappy, and it was Friday evening and no medical centre open before Monday am, the nearest hospital a long, long way. Mn diagnosed and suggested solutions. I was nearly in tears with gratitude.

Phineyj · 17/05/2024 17:39

Lots of practical tips over the years but what stands out is a talking to I got regarding my problematic sibling relationship. It really made a difference.

I love "Ask me anything" too. It's often quite educational!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 17/05/2024 17:48

Yes, many times, and I'm going to give the antihistamines a go!

When DD was about 15 she wanted to get a tattoo - a daft one with dollar signs (we're in the UK. It was copied from some celeb.). MN advice said to get her to draw it and stick it on her mirror for three months - if she still loved it, she could have it. Well, it was a risk, but I said it to her. Two weeks later the picture came down and no more was said. That was 15 years ago! (She's had two done as an adult, ones that have a special meaning to her). So I was very grateful to MN.

Sourisblanche · 17/05/2024 18:17

Yes lots over the years, school appeal advice, moving overseas, insomnia recommendations, recipes….

HarryBlackberry1 · 17/05/2024 18:19

JinglingSpringBells always gives great HRT advice. I am thankful to her.

lemoncrisp · 17/05/2024 18:24

Life saving advice soon after I joined in 2013. Helped me recognise dh is autistic and explained all the difficulties in our marriage. Still married after 43 years.

KateMiskin · 17/05/2024 18:25

Yes, but generally not on AIBU.

Jeezitneverends · 17/05/2024 18:29

Yes, about going to Turkey to have a gastric sleeve done….over 2 years later I’m over 14 stones down and living a very healthy life which i otherwise wouldn’t be

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 17/05/2024 18:31

When I was in the thick of it with 2 little ones I read ‘everyone fed, no one dead’ on here and it honestly saved my sanity. My dc are older now but I work in a primary school and still find myself saying that some days 😁

Porageeater · 17/05/2024 18:35

Many, many times yes. This thread is timely maybe because I was just thinking how much I hated the place. But most people are kind and supportive.

PoochiesPinkEars · 17/05/2024 19:21

Absolutely!! I am wiser because of the collective support here. Even posters I don't agree with teach me something often, even if it's just to shine a light on an attitude I want to avoid developing myself.
When my dd's school suggested she might be needing to be assessed for autism, which was totally out of the blue and a massive shock, this was the first place I came for solace, wisdom, perspective etc - didn't let me down I was educated and armed with essential information resources in short order. Amazing so grateful to all on the threads about Nd.
But I came first when I had my dc1 who is about to turn 14 and I gained so much in both practical and emotional ways that really really helped me be a better parent.
So many ways this has helped me, I try to pay that back when I think I can and still learn lots here.
It is a bit more abrasive than it used to be, but show me a website that isn't, I still think it's great.

EggcornAcorn · 17/05/2024 19:28

Well I for one am interested in the brand name of the antihistamine, please!
