Have you ever had good advice on MN?

A few months ago I was struggling with an overactive bladder, which was really bothering me. I went to the GP who prescribed some meds. They helped the symptoms but made me over sedated and I had to stop them. I was prescribed the same in patch form which had no impact at all.

while browsing Mn at the time someone had started a thread on the very same issue. Cheap otc antihistamines were suggested, so I tried and OMG what a life changer!!!! I can now live my life not worrying about where the nearest loo is.

I don’t remember who suggested it but wish to thank whoever it was.

have you acted on MN advice and it was effective?

More than I can count from legal, money, to so many things, relationships etc.

And yes! Many medical issues and it really pisses me off when someone comes in a forum to say... This isn't the NHS seek medical advice.

We are all adults we all know this.

Starseeking · 17/05/2024 19:52

Absolutely. I posted a thread under a different username about my EXDP who'd been stringing me along (we'd been engaged for a number of years, had 2 DC and a mortgaged house).

He'd been gaslighting me for years, and had become emotionally abusive as he knew I was waiting for the marriage.

MN not only helped me to see the situation for what it was, but kind posters also gave invaluable advice about how to extract myself from the relationship. My EXDP was completely blindsided, and 3 years down the line he is still bitter about me leaving, as he never thought I would.

Me now, I'm living my best life in my own (calm) house with DC, and dating with a view to finding a long-term partner.

Small issues and general info, loads and loads of useful info.
A specific long running thread, so much mutual use and support.

MN advice acted on and it's effectiveness:

Legal have been amazing and have helped me considerably, and most of all helped me help myself.

When I was just too ill to know how ill I was, I came on here, and some wise souls gently convinced me to get myself taken to A&E and literally told me what words to use to get listened to. (No one medical had been hearing me and I'd given up)
Thanks to them I was admitted, and they were right about just how ill I was. I was in for months.

Home ed when suddenly back footed into it. The help and advice, and confidence raising received, changed the situation from just trying to survive disaster to one of the best decisions ever made, that set the whole family onto a better path and allowed us to turn a bad situation into something very positive for all.

Loads and loads. Everything from housekeeping to parenting, style & beauty to friendships. I've learned so much on here.

Over a decade ago the SEN boards changed my sons life

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/05/2024 20:06

Yes. The support I had during my husband leaving for OW and my divorce saved my life, literally.

SeasickAccountant · 17/05/2024 20:11

Wait - OP, are you saying that antihistamines stopped you from weeing all the time ?

AdaColeman · 17/05/2024 20:38

Soon after I joined MN, I read a post from a Mum worried that her little children didn't seem to be thriving, and asking for advice. She mentioned as an aside that she'd found some unknown "seed pods" amongst their clothing.

Within a few minutes her problem had been diagnosed as tape worms, and medics soon appeared giving her stern instructions. Apparently she had a wide range of pets in the house and didn't believe in worming them.

The high level of specialist knowledge and advice freely given, really impressed me, and I became an enthusiastic Mumsnetter. I often wonder if she followed the advice, and hope the health of her children improved.

GentlemanJohnny · 17/05/2024 20:46

Advice, no (mainly 'cos I've never asked for any) but useful information that would have taken all day to track down - yes.

MN is a great place for tapping sources of specialised knowledge.

RampantIvy · 17/05/2024 20:50

Yes. When DD was bullied at school in year 7. The advice I received was excellent. I followed it and got the result I wanted.

Loads of other advice has been useful as well.

Echobelly · 17/05/2024 20:55

Yes, I started one thread where some people were a bit harsh but it did make me realise that I was sometimes projecting myself too much on my oldest and their feelings, as in thinking 'Well, I was a bit like that at that age that so they're probably feeling the same way I would'. And that helped me stop doing that.

Octavia64 · 17/05/2024 20:58

Yes.

Helped me get my kids braces, find a speech therapist and many other things.

BG2015 · 17/05/2024 21:02

Yes, helped me to realise what a toxic relationship I was in with a man who was horrible to my 2 children.

That was 11 years ago now and the awful EX met, married and divorced some poor woman during those years. Thankfully I never married him.

My kids, now 24 & 21 occasionally say how nasty he was. I'm now with a lovely man, together for 10 years in September.

It was hard hearing the truth and there were some harsh things said to me but I'll be forever grateful to MN.

@Spidey66 looks like a number of us would like you to share the name of the antihistamine that sorted your overactive bladder! Please!

occasionally and inexplicably I go for a day or so where I am deeply uncomfortable needing to wee constantly even when my bladder isn’t full. It feels like the beginnings of a uti but I always test negative and don’t have the full symptoms. Then, as inexplicably as it comes, the feelings go.

Ossoduro2 · 17/05/2024 21:14

And to answer your question. I have had a few genuine nuggets of wisdom on here that I have acted on and then carried forward with me through life. One of them was in relation to a neighbour who was behaving really badly towards me and I was trying to persuade them to change their behaviour. Someone told me that arseholes don’t just wake up one morning and realise they’ve been being unreasonable arseholes and change their ways. It was the wisdom I needed to realise I should cut my losses and move house!

TeaPleaseX · 17/05/2024 21:16

Yeah about 8 years ago. Really struggling with intrusive thoughts. I didn't know what they was. I thought I was losing my mind and having a breakdown. A poster explained to me she had the same thing. Explained how common it was. And I actually started CBT and started recovering from it all and could actually let the thoughts go. I've still got her post screen shot on my phone somewhere.
She saved me and she doesn't even know. Flowers

CountingCrones · 17/05/2024 21:20

I said a general thanks upthread, but I would be remiss not to mention everyone on the Christmas Bargains threads.

They’ve helped me get some very much wanted gifts for much less than the list prices, flagged some bargain stocking stuffers and some excellent original and inexpensive present ideas over the past few years.

Thanks, bargain hunters!

Isometimeswonder · 17/05/2024 21:21

@Spidey66 can you please explain this? Do you mean like a hay-fever tablet? Just one a day?
Am struggling with bladder issues so would love advice! Thank you 👍

GoogleWhacking · 17/05/2024 21:33

Phenergan (promethazine) works for an overactive bladder. That is probably the antihistamine OP is talking about. Sold mainly as sleep aid nowadays.

LunaTheCat · 17/05/2024 21:36

The feminism and gender page has really opened my mind to the perniciousness of gender wool.

MichaelAndEagle · 17/05/2024 21:41

Yes, from the little things to the big. I read many many threads with advice for people leaving their husbands or partners, which was a huge help.
For all its not perfect, mumsnet has probably changed many lives.

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2024 21:43

Yes, lots. I think I've only posted for advice once, on a work thing, and got lots of sensible, good advice. I've picked up lots of useful stuff on here over the years, it's been great. I wish I'd known about MN when my DC were small. I try to pay it back now if I know something about what's being asked.

Same. Even have a bag that says "came for the babies, stayed for the feminism" Grin

Any cheap ones basically! Cetrizine, loratidine, I can change brands with no change in effectiveness. Just go to Savers, Poundland and buy 2 or 3 months at a time.
