Food poisoning aftermath

On Sunday we took the kids to a farm, ate an ice lolly in the sun and came home. That evening about 7pm I was struck down with violent D&V that didn't stop all night, both happening at the same time quite often. It was awful. A couple of times my breathing got really shallow and I felt like I lost consciousness a few times, lots of confusion too. My DH called an ambulance after I collapsed on the bedroom floor at 4am- Once over from the paramedics, everything was working ok, heart ok, blood pressure very low but ok, oxygen levels fine. So they left me with rehydration salts and instructions to rest and let it take course.
I stopped vomitting by Monday night. Bad poops stopped Tuesday.

But it's now Thursday and I can still barely force down any food and I still feel extremely weak and weird. My brain feels foggy and slow and all I want to do is lay down.

I am sipping plenty of fluids and I have eaten a bagel each day as well as a bowl of plain pasta last night.

How long can this go on for?

Oh you poor thing.
I got food poisoning a few years ago but not as bad as you.
I felt rough and couldn't eat properly for around 2 - 3 weeks and then stayed on bland food for a couple more, Jacket potatoes were a life saver.
Hope you feel better soon

Was it the ice lolly?

dratdratdrat · 16/05/2024 11:24

I don't know what caused it! My kids both had the same ice lolly as me and they were fine. I wondered if it could have been something I picked up at the farm, although I did thoroughly wash my hands.

It might have been norovirus, rather than food poisoning. That tends to come on suddenly from both ends.

I had noro in December and although I only had two episodes each of D and V (have had it before when I'd been sick every half-hour for 10 hours), it completely wiped me out. My whole body hurt for two days afterwards and I couldn't eat properly for about a week (like you, literally force-feeding myself to get some energy).

I have also had campylobacter food poisoning, but that was just D... Took nearly four weeks to get over that and in the end had to have antibiotics after a stool sample.

It might have been a virus instead. I called mine food poisoning but me and DH had eaten the same thing so maybe not.
I have had food poisoning but that time it was another level, puking and shitting for around 12 hours on and off and ended up too weak to move so crawled into the walk in shower and just let it all happen (TMI).
I wasn't properly well for 2-3 months
More likely to have been a virus OP

Sounds like noro

As it’s several days, I’d contact the gp and get checked out before the weekend.

There are a few nasty vomiting and diarrhoea bugs that can be picked up from farms. Cryptosporidium,E.Coli and salmonella can all cause the symptoms you've described. Not sure if it would happen as quickly as you've said though, but just a thought.

I had this from a contaminated fish dish in a restaurant. After six weeks of eating bland was still as loose as a goose so the GP gave me some tablets to settle my gut. GP said it wasn't worth reporting because I was the only person in the group affected.
