Entertain me or inspire me while I wait to see if made redundant!

Work for a large company, and enjoy my job.

Short-notice dept-wide meeting was called for this morning, short story is 'resources disproportionately being spent on wages' - which is code for 'people are going to be made redundant'. We all have a meeting with a member of leadership team today. Mine's this afternoon.

Anyone fancy keeping me entertained or inspired while I agonise, and maybe stop me eating the coffee and walnut cake I just bought 🍰.

I'm WFH today and frankly can't concentrate.

Arghhhh

Eat the cake! I went through this earlier this week and found having a treat made me feel a little better. Virtual handhold as I know how unsettling this feels.

catmg · 16/05/2024 11:40

Oof that's tough. Eat the cake!

Let us know how it goes, fingers crossed the outcome is what you'd like.

purplesparklydinosaur · 16/05/2024 11:42

I’ll chat - I’m waiting for an exam result that is supposed to be posted at noon.

Although it was supposed to be posted at noon on Monday so heaven only knows if it will actually arrive!

TokyoSushi · 16/05/2024 11:42

Oh no, hideous, I'd spend the wait eating loads of cake - good luck!

Lengokengo · 16/05/2024 11:42

Update your Linked-In profile! Look for jobs/ recruiters. Then after you get the news, take the rest of the day off.

AgnesX · 16/05/2024 11:43

Fingers crossed 🤞

I'm now in the mood for a bit of coffee and walnut cake. Of course I have none 🤤

I reckon an afternoon meeting means you’re fine.

DrRichardWebber · 16/05/2024 12:05

If you were being made redundant it would be in the morning

mynewusername2023 · 16/05/2024 12:08

The meeting I had when I was told I was at risk of redundancy was on the afternoon, and they told me I could go home straight after. Every meeting after that until I was made redundant was always in the afternoon. Sorry.

Well my fingers are crossed for you!

I was once working for a large financial firm when we heard that there would be redundancies announced that day. Morale was really low so most people were merrily rubbing their hands, then packing their desks up.

all day long people were called one by one into the board room and didn’t return so we had no idea if they were the ones out or in.

At the very end of the day we were all called into an open plan office and given a ‘pep talk’ by the Big Boss who basically said we were commodities and business was business. He with the two company cars and a full time driver.

Oh and hey, congrats, we were the ones being kept on!

There was absolute silence and a few swears at the back of the room.

This was not quite the response he was expecting.

If you’ve got personal info saved on your work computer/email now is the time to make a record of it. Names of people you’d like to stay in contact with. Any info on HR policies, procedures et you need from the intranet.

Always best to be prepared.

This is good advice, either way you're prepared.

I went through this at a Big4 about a month and a half ago. I was extremely nervous. Fingers crossed for you OP !

purplesparklydinosaur · 16/05/2024 12:19

Thanks - it was on time and I got a first!

I hope your meeting goes well - and if you’re made redundant I hope it leads you to better things!

keepingwithitjustabout · 16/05/2024 12:22

Anyone got any great inspiring links or podcasts on why being made redundant is the best thing ever?

I'm 50 and just feeling like my professional life was getting back on track and I was being appreciated for my talents after quite a few years with it in a holding pattern whilst I raised kids, dealt with SEN kids, went through Covid had my parents live with us, watched my dad go through the worst kind of dementia (Lewy Bodies), project managed a house build and helped keep DHs company alive through shit Covid times.

I hope all goes well, OP. Just sitting in hospital waiting on DD (16yo) to have surgery this afternoon. Wishing it was the evening for both of us.

Op why dont you spend some time googling employment law around redundancy.
For example, they don't make a person redundant they make a position redundant. Will they offer you an alternative role and what you might consider accepting if so. How much a potential pay off will be. Do you have any protected characteristics ?

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 16/05/2024 12:32

I got made redundant from a job I quite liked. They paid me a lot of money to leave and I quickly found a job I LOVE. If it is redundancy then I hope your story works out like mine did.

This morning, I'd calculate how much you'd like as a settlement if redundancy is inevitable (Statutory + PILON + hush money!) And be prepared to negotiate. Also prepare your argument for why you're amazing and they can't do without you.

OldTinHat · 16/05/2024 12:35

Good luck OP and eat that cake!

Some great advice here such as going through your computer to download and delete anything personal. Ditto emails.

Get job hunting. If you're not made redundant then, who knows, you might find something fantastic that you want to apply for anyway.

I've been made redundant twice, both in the morning. First time, they offered me an alternative position 300 miles away which I declined. Luckily I'd already been head hunted as rumours had been circulating. Second time, they gave me the news, asked for my keys and told me to leave there and then. I was put on gardening leave on full pay but was fortunate to be employed the next day.

The waiting will be horrible, but I hope whatever the outcome, that everything works out for you.
