Brazilian / Hollywood wax experience

Hi everyone!

I'm pretty fed up of shaving, and hair removal creams aren't for me.

I'm planning on getting laser in the next few years but I have other things that need paying for before that.

I'm thinking about getting my pubic hair waxed but for some reason I'm nervous about the pain. My friend (beautician) told me to not go when I'm on my period as pain threshold is lower, not that I would go on my period anyway.

I've booked to have it done now. How painful is it? How long does it last? I'm having wax strips instead of the wax beads.

Any tips? Thank you!

Apologise I am NOT having wax strips, I am having the other type of wax (just checked my booking!)

You can take painkillers 30 mins or so before your appointment. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time - there's something about rushing in and jumping on the table that makes it more painful for some reason!

Honestly, as long as you've booked a reputable place with good reviews, you'll be fine. They are professionals and will move quickly. I honestly find my shins more painful than pretty much anywhere else!

Ah thank you! I'll take some paracetamol before hand then and get there with good time.

It's a reputable salon near me and the reviews look good. I know they offer paper knickers but does anyone actually bother with these?

Or do people just go full on flange out?

It would be quite hard to do a really thorough Hollywood with the paper knickers on. They just get in the way. The waxer won't care about your bits. They see 10-15 sets of flaps each day.

If you're getting it all off, definitely don't bother with the paper knickers. The esthetician won't bat an eyelid, as a PP said!

When you ask how long does it last - do you mean how long does the wax take, or how long will you be hair free? For the first q, just a hollywood can take around 15/20 mins. If you're also getting a full leg, it can be somewhere between 40 mins and an hour depending on how hairy you are and how experienced the waxer is.

For the second q, it depends on your hair growth cycle, and how long it's been since you last did any hair removal (the longer the better). I would exfoliate and avoid moisturiser on the day of the wax to get the best results.

Most places do this, but I had to ask a new waxer the other day, but once they pull the wax off they should put their hand down on that area - it takes the sting out. I’ve been having waxes for years and it is a bit stingy but it goes really quickly.

Are you having the hot wax, the kind they put an oil on first then smear the hot wax on then when it's cool rip the whole thing off? If so it does hurt...what waxing doesn't, but strip waxing is 1000 times more painful especially if you are having everything off. I had hot wax Hollywood's for years and it still was eye watering everytime I had it. I have now had lasering done so don't get any more hair there.

Unicorntastic · 15/05/2024 15:26

I have never found it that bad and a good waxer will lessen the pain by their technique, having said that ive never got the lower legs waxed as I couldn't stand the pain!
