White wine for tonight

Hi, I've been invited round to neighbours for an impromptu dinner tonight and want to take a bottle of white wine. I know they are wine drinkers but I'm not and know nothing about wine. Don't want to spend too much but don't want to take them something obviously cheap or disgusting.
I have access to a few small supermarkets...co-op, m&S, Tesco.
Please help what wine should I take?

M&S wines are generally decent. I’d go Chablis as most people like it.

Wellywanging · 15/05/2024 12:54

Ohhh never even heard of Chablis, I am clueless.

How much should I spend on a bottle?

I'd probably go with a Sauvignon Blanc at about £10-12. Oyster Bay or Brancott Estate are good ones IMO.

I hate Sauvignon Blanc, tastes like vomit 🤢 so I'd go with a Pinot Grigio which I love.

TokyoSushi · 15/05/2024 13:00

Yes Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc would be nice, about £10/£11 and fairly widely available.

My drink at home wine is normally around 10-12 a bottle so to take somewhere I’d go up to 20 but tbh once you get over a tenner a bottle it’s pretty “quaffable” and most people aren’t wine connoisseurs.

LaPalmaLlama · 15/05/2024 13:01

also quite often there will be offers

Agree with M&S, they’re usually good value. I would stay clear of NZ Sauvignon as many people find them too acidic. I would take a Chablis or a Sancerre.

Wellywanging · 15/05/2024 13:14

It's not a special occasion just a casual dinner, I feel ok spending up to 10 quid but 20 would be more like a special present I feel.

I’ll suggest a Gavi or an Albariño - they’re usually around the £10-12 mark.

TakeOnFlea · 15/05/2024 13:32

Don't spend more than a tenner OP. They'll not even know I imagine. Posters on here love to have you think they're "quaffing" 🤢 £20 wines all over the place.

Just go to Tesco and get a bottle of this. £8 clubcard price

My current favourite is this Rioja - it’s on offer at £6 a bottle at the moment.

I'd personally get something light like a Pinot Grigio. New Zealand wines can be too floral for some tastes. You should get a decent one for a tenner at Tesco.
