Help! Old Volvo xc60 or xc90?

Our old (2008) xc90 which I LOVED (but was heavy on fuel and high road tax) has got terminal issues so looking at a replacement….2009 xc60 or similar age (2009/2010) xc90? Found a great xc60 but need to tell them today if I want it….i know it will be reliable and big enough for day to day, but we do a lot of uk travel and worried boot won’t be big enough, we also have a dog which will take up half the boot. The way I see it, for fuel economy and reliability the xc60 will be great (important as I do 40 miles for school runs a day) but for practicality (chucking kids bikes in etc) and boot space the 90 wins. Does anyone have any experience of downsizing from the 90 to the 60? With 2 kids and a dog how do you think the 60 is size wise? Thanks for advice x

I have a 2011 Volvo v60, I think 2009 is too old look if possible a at least a 4 year old car. D you need a XC?

@user1471505356 I wish we could afford a 4 year old one, unfortunately the 2010 sort of age is probably the best we can afford (with a reasonable, not too high, mileage). I like the xc because we do a fair bit of rural driving in the north and I like the 4 wheel drive for winter. Also like being higher up, my 90 was an absolute tank, I loved it! Just a bit heavy on fuel and issues arose from time to time whereas I get the impression the 60 is better on both those aspects. Do you find the boot space ok in yours? We will lose half of the 60s boot space to the dog 😱the lack of space is my main concern really.

I haven’t gone from a 90 to a 60, but I went from a pickup with a canopy to a xc60 recently (slightly newer, 2014 but close!) and I’m really happy with it. It’s a cracking car with much better fuel economy than my ute. Of course it has less ‘boot’ space than my truck but it’s a very good size regardless. A couple of mates have xc60s of various ages and they love theirs too.

I drive an old style XC90 and my sister has a newer XC60. There is a bit of difference in boot space but I'd say it's not that significant. When we replace our (very much loved but expensive to run!) XC90 we're likely to downsize for the same reasons as you.

@Muffin101 thank you, that’s really good to know, the fuel economy would be a major plus as I’m spending £400 or more on fuel at the moment.
@LBOCS2 my 90 feels so big in comparison, absolutely gutted that it’s died at the worst time! Do you think with a dog taking up half the boot that the other half will be enough for 2 kids paraphernalia/ luggage if we go away etc. The joy of the 90 is there’s no need for a roof rack, it can all be shoved in the back! But day to day the 60 will be more economical!

I have no advice to give, but I am a massive Volvo fan, so watching with interest 😄

@VolvoFan honestly now I’ve had one (albeit an old one) there’s no going back. Recently visited various car showrooms and nothing quite comes up to the mark for what suits us, I did really like Land Rover discovery but in the price bracket we are looking at, reliability is going to be an issue! Never thought I would love this old man brand so much!
