Help with online safety - controlling iPad use from Android

I'm struggling to find a solution by Googling and wondered if anyone here had any luck managing this situation.

Me and DH have Android phones. I am very much a Microsoft girl and have the paid for 365 account.

DD (11) has an Android phone. I struggled to control this from the Family Safety app so created her a Google account and control that from Family Link. This is working well!

DS (nearly 10) mainly uses the iPad for YouTube and Roblox. He really struggles to stop.

I can't find anything to control the iPad from Windows or Android. Is the easiest solution to buy an old SIM free iPhone or would that not work because I'd need a working phone line to authenticate.

Feel like I'm going round in circles.

Neurodiversity galore in our house and this is becoming a real battleground. Any advice please 🙏

Can you set up screen time on the iPad itself and then lock the settings so only you can change them with a screen time passcode:

Follow the instructions for if you manage a child account using their device

Use Screen Time on your iPhone or iPad – Apple Support (UK)

With Screen Time, you can access real-time reports showing how much time you spend on your device.

Otherwise, I think there are 3rd party apps that you can use which would work on both iOS and android - but I can’t recommend any in particular

You could also think about controlling the access of the iPad to the WiFi - if the iPad is generally used for things that require internet access

Thank you, I'll have a look at the actual device settings. I forgot you could do router settings.

Apple is bad unless you're an all apple family plus the fact that you can't also log into their iPad or phone on your own account is very annoying.

Even if you do have an iPhone the family settings are a bit shit compared to Google family link as we found out recently.

You can set time limits in the settings but it's a bit clunky and difficult to modify but it's your only real option. Plus as you say blocking internet access at the router.

We tried qustodio and Kaspersky, both easily evaded by the kids and annoying to use to boot, don't bother with them.

Thanks @NormalAuntFanny, it's as I thought 😏. Good to know what to avoid as well.

We got the iPad for school as their primary school use them heavily and it seemed like a good choice at the time. Their older and I want to give them more independence but DS just can't moderate himself too well (ADHD). The iPad's getting on a bit and won't be replaced as they go into secondary school!
