Check your driving licence.
Mine had expired and I only found out yesterday because I used it as an ID a while back which had just been checked.
No reminder at all.
Luckily it's only four days ago and I've reapplied so all legal now.
Yes, it's my responsibility but I'm sure I'm not the only one to fall foul of this.

DVLA sent me a reminder this week - so I’ve just renewed mine. I wouldn’t have know if the reminder hadn’t been sent. Not sure why I received a reminder but you didn’t?

EasilyDeterred · 11/05/2024 20:41

I've always had reminders for mine

GoodVibesHere · 11/05/2024 20:42

I don't understand what it's got to do with how long you've lived in your house?

I had a letter telling me to renew mine a couple of years ago. I've lived here 20 years but I don't see how that would make a difference?

isthewashingdryyet · 11/05/2024 20:44

The web site says reminders are sent, but like the OP we were only about four days from our licences being out of date, and we still haven’t had the reminder.

very easy to update on the gov.dvla site

check your driving licence and make a note in your phone diary to renew.

also worth checking passport at the same time

isthewashingdryyet · 11/05/2024 20:45

@GoodVibesHere you have to change the address on your licence when you move, so ten years ago means you need to renew.

AHFaemale · 11/05/2024 20:45

My licence has an old axdress from 39 years ago. I've lived in several countries since and u am bacj in uk now. They made it so difficult to change address that i havent. I also have one wuthout a photo 😀

That should read 30 years ago

DuploTrain · 11/05/2024 20:49

You still have to renew your licence after 10 years even if you move - the licence expiry date stays the same when you change your address (or name).

I got a reminder in the post though.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 11/05/2024 20:55

But those of us who have been in our houses forever and have paper driving licences dont need to renew after 10 years.

Topsy44 · 11/05/2024 21:00

That happened to me about 6 months ago. I didn’t receive a reminder and thankfully it wasn’t too out of date! I thought the online renewal process was v good though!!

LauderSyme · 11/05/2024 21:04

This happened to my DM. She just happened to notice that her licence had recently expired and she'd been driving illegally, and had a big panic stations flurry to get it sorted.

WhereIsMyLight · 11/05/2024 21:09

If you move house, you licence doesn’t automatically renew. You can choose to renew it when you move but you can also move and not renew, so someone could have moved 2 years ago and their licence has expired. People should have a rough idea of when they expire, similar to passports, and if they can’t remember, make a point of checking annually.

Yes as long as it was issued before 1998 and you don’t move, then you can keep it till you’re 70, then they will issue a photo card.

op, I didn’t realise, and hadn’t updated mine and moved several times, a friend told me, and mine had expired about 5 years previous, I was quite shocked as didn’t know it expired, couldn’t apply on line, but was renewed with little hassle.

The thing is that if you are of a certain age and your original paper licence wouldn't have expired until you were seventy, it kind of muddies the water.
I know I'm very lucky that this was spotted by someone else - know my passport expires next year, but hadn't thought about my driving licence at all.

Yup I was with my uncle on a driving thing recently and he pulled out this ancient tattered paper licence that he’s had for 30 years. Apparently it expires when he is 70?so another few years to go.

vipersnest1 · 11/05/2024 21:15

@Sunnyandsilly, mine expired four days ago. I only found out because I'm executor of my mums estate and had provided my driving licence as proof of my identity for the sale of her home - it was my solicitor who spotted it.

We have always had reminders, I wonder why some people don't?

Heatherbell1978 · 11/05/2024 21:19

This is what caused my DH to forget to renew his licence last year. No reminder sent - we realised both of our reminders went to old address. I renewed as I'm a bit more on the ball than him...

hjrl · 11/05/2024 21:22

DH and I have loved here, me twenty plus years him forty. Never ever ever had a reminder. Mine was picked up on a check at work. Both passed when living here.

Let's hope DVLA don't need to get in touch with you. I'm pretty sure your insurance is compromised if your licence isn't up to date too. I don't know why you wouldn't notify them of your address.

RuthW · 11/05/2024 21:28

Mine doesn't run out until I'm in my 70s. Another 15 years

You could be fined £1000 for not updating the address. You likely won't, but it is a risk.

Mine is falling to bits - I keep it in a plastic wallet. I have to use it as ID for DBS checks and renewals. My current HR manager refuses to touch it! So I have to go up, take it out, copy it in front of her. #crazylady And then you get people/organisations refusing to accept it as ID. It is a legal form of ID.

dreamingofsun · 12/05/2024 14:38

Son's and husband's both expired recently and neither of them had received reminders despite us living at this address for 25 years and updating the DVLA accordingly when we moved

Doesnt affect insurance. I know the law. 😊. DVLA are atrocious.
