Argh cryptic quiz driving me mad - help!!

I am struggling through a cryptic quiz on dog breeds… I just can’t get one of them. Can anyone help? The clue is:

16 + 9 = ?

I'm totally flummoxed!!

What are some of the other clues? Are they all numbers, i.e. numbers of letters?

Letters of the alphabet? P & I ? Patterdale and iredale terriers?

Do the numbers refer to answers in the quiz that you have already answered? Put them together to make labradoodle or similar?

16 was “Province named after Portuguese explorer” and 9 was “has a bad smell and isn’t very bright by the sound of it” so its LABRADOODLE!!

Thanks everyone, this cryptic lark is new to me as I’ve avoided them for decades. I love the way you can mull things over for ages but it can be bloody frustrating!
