Any physicists out there?

I have light-hearted question for any one who has studied physics (that did not include me).
Many moons ago a boyfriend sent me a letter. (He sent me lots as this was before Internet 😀).

He signed it off with symbols, and now all these years on, I'm wondering what they mean. Can anyone translate for me? Or is it gibberish?

Any physicists out there?

Mathematician rather than physicist.

It means the sum from zero to infinity of all the positive integers.

Z is all the integers
Z + is all the positive integers so 0,1,2,3 etc

The sum of all of them is a big number

He means infinite kisses

DH says the bit on the left means "sum of from 0 to infinity"

Mumoftwo1316 · 11/05/2024 09:58

The x is a kiss, innit. Sum of infinite integer kisses.

I agree it's maths but you need to have a physicist brain to geddit.

(Physicist here married to another one)

Crikey this takes me back to when I was in a relationship with a Cambridge undergrad/PhD physicist in the 80s/90s, fountain pen and all!

Lol.

This (once) theoretical physicist doesn't have such a romantic brain and rolled her eyes thinking "Z isn't a function, what gibberish". Grin

That's very sweet OP. My physicist husband would never think of it but as you can tell I'm not deserving either. Grin

Oh my goodness, this has me welling up! Thank you

Thank you so much everyone.
He was my first love and although our lives moved on, knowing this is what he wrote means so much to me.

My physicist DH does xxx cubed (to the power of 3). I'm offended now that I don't get infinite kisses. 😂

OpusGiemuJavlo · 11/05/2024 10:12

It's not just infinite kisses. The sum of all positive integers between 0 and infinity is a higher order of infinity than ordinary infinity. So "More than infinite kisses" is a better translation.

😂You need to have words with him!

Well spotted. He always used a fountain pen, and this was in the 80s!

Some people still use fountain pens.....

Too right! He clearly relies on my total ignorance of physics and maths! 😁

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/05/2024 10:40

Kisses to infinity and beyond.

I still use a fountain pen.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/05/2024 10:46

I was an undergrad physicist in the 1980s (just). I still have my fountain pen. My godfather gave it to me for my 18th birthday and I wrote all my A levels with it, and every written exam since.
