Before anyone says well you’re posting here it can’t be too bad - I was stung TWO hours ago and it isn’t abating . Sheer hot poker fucking agony

Right on the end of my finger, the only things which help are ice water but the second I take it out it’s back again

please help 🙏

I have no help but yes a hornet sting is nasty. Far worse than bee or wasp

WonderingWanda · 10/05/2024 20:28

Ouch. Have you taken pain killers and antihistamine? Is the sting definitely out? Don't know much about hornet stings so no idea if they leave them like bees or pull them out like a wasp.

Giveupnow · 10/05/2024 20:29

Eurgh we found a hornet in my baby’s room last night and it’s given me the heeby jeebies. We sucked it up in the vacuum
cleaner as we were too terrified to go near it. They are genuinely the biggest things. Horrifying.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/05/2024 20:31

Ouch, poor you. Second an antihistamine and pain killers, plus maybe a stiff drink if that’s not contraindicated. Would also apply an antiseptic cream if you have some.

Hope you feel better soon.

Painkillers yes. No antihistamine in the house.

Im considering amputation soon

Look at the little bastard - still let the bloody thing out of the house alive (mother Theresa over here)

Jesus that's bloody massive!!!

WonderingWanda · 10/05/2024 20:35

@SunflowerandHoney maybe try something alcoholic...for the pain...prior to chopping it off 😬

I always have horrible reactions to stings but have escaped a hornet so far, I can imagine it is horrendous. I think hydrocortisone can help reduce the swelling if you have some. Can you send out an SOS for someone to bring you antihistamines?

Iambitingmytongue · 10/05/2024 20:36

Lavender oil

SerafinasGoose · 10/05/2024 20:38

Ugh! <faints>

I'll be seeing that image in my sleep tonight.

PlatinumBrunette · 10/05/2024 20:38

Something acid to counteract the alkaloids - lemon juice or vinegar may help, and more ice.

russiandwarf · 10/05/2024 20:40

Vinegar?? I drank out of a can with a wasp in last summer 🙈 It stung inside my mouth and it was hell. I held vinegar in my mouth and it numbed it a bit. Otherwise…sudocrem? And a stiff drink

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/05/2024 20:41

I had a massive wasp fly into the house yesterday morning while I had the back door open putting the washing out. I wonder if it was actually a hornet, it sounded like a chainsaw. DH was in the shower so I had to put my big girl pants on and deal with it myself, but it's good and dead now. Even my cat was terrified of it and she usually loves chasing flying beasties.

Soonenough · 10/05/2024 20:46

Yes vinegar will help . Also heat up a teaspoon by pouring boiling water over it , then put on sting as hot as you can stand it .

WhiteLily1 · 10/05/2024 20:48

Oh gosh you poor thing sounds awful. I had a wasp sting last year on the bottom of my foot and it was incredibly painful. I took co codamol in the end as I woke up sobbing in the night with the pain. You could try that if not contradicted with what you’ve already taken.
In future to anyone reading- I was told by a professional - take antihistamine within 10 mins of a sting and it will take 90% of it away

MillshakePickle · 10/05/2024 20:52

White vinegar or apple coder vinegar on the sting site helps neutralise the acid.

Hornets can leave the stinger behind. You need to scrape it out with a sterile needle or blade. If you squeeze and pull it, ot may release more venom.

Honestly, can feel you pain. I've had the misfortune to meet a couple of the bastarding things.

Witchbitch20 · 10/05/2024 21:01

Vile things!

Ice pack (10 mins on, 10 mins off for at least an hour).

An onion cut in half, cut side onto the sting area.

paracetamol/ibuprofen

Check the stinger is out.

youreonmute123 · 10/05/2024 21:05

Sympathies, when I was 8/9 I knocked a hornets nest off a wall, well the hornets weren’t happy, I had about 100 stings, you can’t outrun angry hornets!

It’s really hard to not to pass on my fear to the kids, horrible things

jyfvjy · 10/05/2024 21:10

Stick your finger in some vinegar!

mambojambodothetango · 10/05/2024 21:20

I got a hornet sting a few years ago. I cried from the pain. Second only to childbirth. And I have quite a high pain threshold. It still hurt a bit 2-3 days later. It will go away.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 10/05/2024 21:30

Are those the little sods that can also bite you as well as sting you?

C1N1C · 10/05/2024 21:33

At least it's a European hornet!

No idea why that's a consolation...

OldTinHat · 10/05/2024 21:33

Vinegar helps neutralise wasp stings. Not sure if it works the same way with hornet stings though.

ProvincialLady2024 · 10/05/2024 21:34

Why did you let it live? They aren't native are they?

I think they're both alkaline so it should.
